How can we use waste water and residues from biorefinery concepts to produce valuable compounds such as hydrogen? A look in a recently published paper in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering answers this question. MAPEX member Sven Kerzenmacher and his colleagues present bioanodes for the operation of microbial electrolysis cells with the effluent of a biogas plant. These cells could be used, for example, to produce hydrogen, bioplastics or proteins. "Compared to state-of-the-art", explains Kerzenmacher, head of the Research Group Environmental Process Engineering at the Universität Bremen, "our bioanodes exhibit improved performance and do not show the dramatic deactivation previously reported". Moleaer’s technology uses air and water to generate in-situ chemistry in the form of nanobubbles that selectively target contaminants that cause inefficiencies and odors in wastewater treatment. Nanobubbles enable process intensification by breaking down slowly biodegradable contaminants like surfactants and FOG to more readily biodegradable compounds, making the wastewater easier to treat.
