Y'all know I bring excitement and an anything-is-possible vibe to work. That's why I'm excited about participating in an upcoming International Semiconductor Executive Summits panel on workforce needs in #powersemiconductors. Some 20+years ago, I was a marketer at Nitronex, a power semiconductor startup. On a long drive to go ⛷ in WV, I once talked nonstop about our RF power devices to my now husband and his friend, both telecom tower engineers. Why? Well, Nitronex devices were component parts used in wireless base stations at cell tower sites. Um, ok And they boosted cell signals So? Which meant tower breathing space/coverage areas could be maintained as data load increased. And? We all had these new devices in our pockets. Nokias. Motorolas. (Remember the RARZ?) We began to text, take pictures, and use the WWW. On tiny, low-res screens. And business placed bets on what “killer app” was going to drive widespread adoption. ...20 years later I can say there never was a single killer app as evidenced by screens of icons on my 14th gen iPhone... So then what? More users using more features takes up bandwidth. Cell breathing space shrinks. Signals can’t make it to the next tower. Your connection drops. 😕 Then tower companies put up more towers between the existing towers. ...Everyone loves cell towers in their backyards and open fields. Especially, the tree ones... Or, You can power up the signal so it can make it to the next tower uninterrupted. 🥁 Enter Nitronex's power semiconductors. You're thinking power semiconductors are kind of cool now, aren't you? Today, they are still enabling cool stuff: EVs, renewable energy, aerospace, defense, data centers, and yes still our mobile devices. So what’s the problem? The Workforce. ❌The industry has a brand problem. The companies at this event could be household names, but they are not. ❌Kids don’t think careers in semiconductors are cool—even if they are. ❌The industry faces a retirement cliff. ❌Worker demand is sky high and increasing due to reshoring. ❌Employers aren’t attracting and retaining talent. Especially women. I hope it’s not lost on you that I am the only woman speaking at this event. And I’m representing a workforce perspective, not a technical one. As I reflect on this, I'm reminded of my time at Nitronex (h/t to all the old crew) and how far we've come - and how far we still have to go. Power semiconductors underpin innovation and it's fun to again be part of an industry shaping a more sustainable future. But we're missing out on diverse perspectives that could accelerate our progress. To my fellow #womenintech: Your voices and talents are needed here! To ISES and industry leaders: Thank you for this platform. Now let's work on making it reflect the diversity of talent out there. Representation matters. Looking forward to great discussions later in the month, and to seeing more women on these stages in the future. 😉 #womeninSTEM #GaN #SiC
