Thanks, Mike! Some degrees in the marketplace are not worth the price students pay for them. In the housing industry, this is called being "upside down." Learning and growing is always worth some investment, but the question is, how much? Questions to ask: 1. Is going into debt for this degree worth the wage I will earn at graduation and beyond? This argument is explained by the chart used in Mike Harper's post. It is difficult to parse out why some people make more money in the same job than others. At certain levels, it is because of qualifications, like a degree or certification. In others, it is innate intelligence, mastery of skills, discrimination, or just simple hard work and hustle. 2. What premium am I paying for a "name brand" school? We often think a school we are familiar with must be better, or a top ten national university is "the only" choice for a flourishing life. Maybe we should look deeply at the PEOPLE working at these schools and ask, "Is this a community I want to be a part of and are they working in a discipline or on a research question that captivates me?" 3. Is higher education as an industry managing costs responsibly? Any time a third-party payer gets involved, prices go up. Traditional education is such a sham. At least the one I got. Imagine graduating from high/secondary school with absolutely no introduction to anything that matters. No understanding of why we work, how to build trust, the care and feeding of relationships, or any encouragement to think of the legacy we’d like to leave behind. That most leave with no fire to fulfill a dream was of no concern to anyone. All that mattered was getting your passes. There is so much that I wasn’t taught, I think a commission of inquiry should be convened to determine what went wrong. But in fact, nothing went wrong. Jimmy Carr reminded me of that in his “Interview with a CEO” hosted by Stephen Bartlett. The system is not set up to have you dream and then teach you how to chase it. The system is set up to produce workers in the system. The education factory was designed to have us value security and make us believe the best way to achieve it is by working for someone else. Getting a job, ideally, a nice manager’s job was all the ambition we would need. And the best way to do that was to get our papers, ideally a degree. University education does make up for this gap. But not really. Most University students enter not knowing what to pursue, and most settle for something only because they have to make a choice. And many pursue the path to money. That’s the dream. And the salary is what they sell out for. It was what I sold out for. Back when I graduated from university, $50K a year was all it took to distract us from our dreams. No doubt it’s higher now. That’s what Jimmy was pointing to. We’re given a choice to keep searching for what will light us up, what’s behind door number 3, OR take this great starting salary. And once you choose the starting salary, your dreaming goes quiet until decades later.  If ever. The good news is that even the degree route is not panning out anymore. Young people are waking up to dreaming and they will pursue theirs. I bet this is one area in which modern tech, fuelled by AI, will excel. The whole concept of what is an education, and how to get one, is about to get turned on its head and I can’t imagine Universities surviving in their current form. But that’s another post. 😎
