Much creative thinking at the first of our Big Conversation events in our Community Wealth Building - learning with experts on the ground. https://lnkd.in/erjDrDmF. Thank you from me and my colleague Makena Lohr to all those experts who have shared their stories and contributed. This week our theme was Environment with powerful recommendations on how to improve transport, energy and the places where we work and live. There were explicit calls to action around measuring social value alongside profits. Every new development needs to demonstrate net benefit - more local employment, cleaner air, better public services - the stuff that gives life and energy directly into our communities. At a time when every news item talks about 'economic growth', our experts are working hard to persuade politicians and policy makers to ensure real benefits in terms of the kinds of wealth communities want and need - healthier places to work and live. The purpose driven enterprises and community groups are leading the way in community wealth building in Oxfordshire and want easier access to business support and longer term funding so less energy is spent chasing and reporting and more on action. Our theme this time was Environment and there can be no economic growth without impacting the environment we all depend on. These conversation aim to support council officers and anchor institutions work with our vibrant voluntary and social enterprise partners to ensure new developments are creating positive impacts for people, local communities and planet. If you weren't already aware, November is Social Enterprise Month - a time to celebrate and support over 12,000 social enterprises across Australia that address pressing social and environmental challenges. These purpose-driven businesses champion causes from environmental sustainability to social justice and economic empowerment, proving that profit and positive impact can go hand-in-hand. To mark this special month, the Institute of Community Directors Australia is offering free training to equip social entrepreneurs with essential skills to grow their impact. By investing in these changemakers, we empower them to drive transformative change in communities across the nation. A little reminder - What is the Power of Social Procurement? Social procurement is more than a trend; it’s a way to ensure our purchasing decisions create social value. By intentionally buying from social enterprises, businesses and individuals can directly contribute to job creation, community resilience, and environmental responsibility. Social enterprises often employ people from marginalised backgrounds, reinvest profits locally, and champion sustainable practices. Through social procurement, organisations can help reduce inequality, foster inclusive growth, and make a meaningful social impact. While Social Enterprise Month shines a spotlight on these businesses, our support shouldn’t end in November. Here are a few ways to make a lasting impact: 1. Integrate social procurement: Review procurement policies and consider how social enterprises can meet your needs. 2. Raise awareness: Share stories of social enterprises you support to inspire others. 3. Collaborate for greater impact: Explore partnerships that could benefit both your organisation and social enterprises. Supporting social enterprises is an investment in a better, more sustainable future. The article defines social value, explains how it can help VCSE organisations maximise their impact, and provides practical steps for starting.
