July 17, LONDON - Fashion label #ThomBrowne and athletic wear giant #Adidas (ADSGn.DE) recommenced their legal war on Wednesday, with #London's High Court hearing the most recent round of a worldwide dispute centered on their rival striped #trademarks. #Adidas was sued in #London in 2021 by #ThomBrowne, a #New York designer who frequently uses a four-bar stripe pattern, to remove various #trademarks that featured #Adidas' well-known three-stripe design. #ThomBrowne contends #Adidas is essentially attempting to create a monopoly on the use of stripes on clothing, having abandoned a three-bar design in 2007 in response to #Adidas' complaints. Adidas, on the other hand, is countersuing Thom Browne, alleging that it is abusing Adidas' good name and brand image by selling leisure and sportswear with four stripes, in violation of its #trademarks. Additionally, Thom Browne is suing Adidas separately under different trademarks in the Netherlands and at the #European Union Intellectual Property Office. Thom Browne's #attorney, Philip Roberts, said that Adidas had exploited certain trademarks as "Trojan horses" to stop other companies from using stripes on their products, while the company's creator watched on in court. "The breadth of #Adidas' asserted monopoly threatens the basic freedom of fashion designers to design clothing in the manner they wish," Roberts further stated in court filings. Charlotte May, an attorney for #Adidas, however, stated in court documents that Thom Browne's 2020 sportswear line debut was a turning moment that "strikes at the heart of the #Adidas business". As evidence that "Thom Browne intend to continue their encroachment into sportswear and sports marketing," she cited a partnership with Spanish soccer team Barcelona and an #NBA player named #LionelMessi's time at the team. #ThomBrowne #Adidas #London #LionelMessi #attorney #trademarks

The leak of the Louis Vuitton Speedy bag has gone viral for its price tag (spoiler, it'll set you back $1M). However, Equally interesting is the fact that NBA stars are involved in the early release and marketing of the bag. In several projects for my clients, I have observed a very noticeable shift to athletes as taste makers. Luxury brands are no longer only embracing more elitist sports such as golf, tennis, polo or sailing, but are increasingly looking at more mainstream sports like football(soccer), basketball, and even surfing. For luxury brands, sports represents a real strategic opportunity - from entering new markets to connecting with younger audiences. #luxury #strategy

I’m excited about the new adidas x FARM Rio Collection for the Rio-based club, Flamengo. This new collection features t-shirts, dresses, shorts, coats, and even flip-flops. But its main piece… … is a new pre-match jersey, which the team will wear in upcoming matches. It showcases: → The cadence of Samba. → The curves of Rio’s sidewalks. → Tropical flowers and vultures (a nod to one of Flamengo’s nicknames). The campaign features generations of women — from grandmothers to granddaughters — all wearing the pieces. I, personally, really like how they’re adjusting their designs for other markets for athleisure wear. Even people who wouldn’t normally wear Adidas are showing interest! I also think it’s a brilliant way for clubs, specifically, to increase their brand awareness and fanbase representations away from traditional jerseys. What do you think of this new collection? Wouldn’t it be great if our mothers and grandparents could wear something representing our favorite clubs?

Tiger Woods made it official last night: The golfing legend is partnering with TaylorMade Golf Company to launch a new brand of golf merchandise. I discussed some interesting points of the deal with CNBC's Jessica Golden: 1. Tiger and TaylorMade set up a completely new company to sell Tiger's products. 2. The deal structure suggests that Tiger and TaylorMade are sharing ownership (and profits) of the new company. 3. The new company was first formed back in March 2023. This indicates that the partnership has been in the works for at least a year (long before Tiger's Nike contract expired). 4. The first trademark filings for "SUN DAY RED" were made back in June 2023 in Jamaica. This was done to hide the relationship and new brand and to reserve trademark rights in the United States. (A trademark filing in Jamaica can reserve a "priority date" in the United States for up to six months under the Paris Convention.) adidas and Thom Browne, Inc. are back in court, battling over their striped trademarks. Thom Browne, known for its four-bar stripe, sued Adidas in London to revoke some of its three-stripe trademarks, claiming Adidas is trying to monopolise stripe use in fashion. 🔸Thom Browne switched from a three-bar pattern in 2007. 🔸Adidas is countersuing for alleged trademark infringement. 🔸The US jury previously rejected Adidas' lawsuit. 🔸Separate cases in the Netherlands and EU are ongoing. 🔸High-profile collaborations with LeBron James and FC Barcelona involved. With tensions high, Thom Browne’s lawyer argued that Adidas' monopoly stifles designers’ creativity. Adidas countered, citing Thom Browne's sportswear launch as a direct threat to its brand. Director - Procurement, Research and Margin Improvement (MBA,CSCP,CPSM,LEAN SIX SIGMA BLACK BELT, SCM PRO, SCMP, PMP)
Hoka has a broad appeal and is worn by a diverse group of people, including trail runners, nurses, celebrities, and even US President Joe Biden. Hoka was acquired by Deckers Brands in 2012 and has experienced significant growth, surpassing the billion-dollar sales mark in 2022. This week the company posted record annual results, driven by Ugg and Hoka, with net sales increasing 18.2 per cent to $4.3bn. Profit rose to $759.5mn, compared with $516.8mn the previous year, and it said it expected net sales to continue to grow by about 10 per cent to $4.7bn. Bigger rivals may be threatened by the pace of its growth, but market share estimates from Stifel show that Nike and Adidas sold a combined 1.1bn pairs globally in 2023, compared with Hoka’s 18mn. Some analysts and investors question whether Hoka can sustain its double-digit growth amid fierce competition and increasing demand for athletic footwear. Hoka is undergoing a leadership change, with Stefano Caroti set to become the new CEO. Hoka currently holds a small market share compared to giants like Nike and Adidas. Hoka has collaborated with fashion brands to cultivate its popularity among the fashion-conscious. Hoka's success has been supported by selective retail partnerships and a direct-to-consumer sales strategy. Deckers has posted record annual results driven by Ugg and Hoka, with net sales increasing and higher profit margins from direct-to-consumer sales. Hoka's growth potential internationally is still significant. Hoka's sponsorship of top athletes contributes to its appeal and attracts more runners to wear their shoes. #hoka #nike #adidas #deckers
