Sometimes you need to sell less to be more profitable. 🤔 We had a client that was doing over $1M+ in monthly revenue. I was astounded by the fast growth. But there was one (serious) problem. The company was losing money and running out of cash so they came to Embarc for help. 🆘 The problem → The company was narrowly focused on revenue growth, and in the pursuit of achieving that growth, they were running on 1.4x return-on-ad-spend (ROAS). They were spending $714,000 in advertising to generate $1,000,000 in revenue. 🤯 There wasn’t enough profit to sustain the business. Our recommendation → REDUCE SALES 🤯 More specifically, make ROAS the top priority KPI at a target of at least 2.5x It turned out that ~$650,000 per month is where they top out at with about $260k in marketing spend. All else equal, ROAS tends to degrade with increased revenue. To simplify a bit, the company was spending an additional $454,000 (=$714k - 260k) in ad spend to gain an extra $350k of revenue. This resulted in negative cash flow. Why did this happen? Growth at all cost mindset. 💯 They didn’t have a strategic CFO to support the founder. The controller was focused on paying bills and reported the prior month's P&L and Growth. ❌ No unit economics monitoring ❌ No 13-week cash flow ❌ No runway forecast Just sell, sell, sell.
