A foundational document for the development of a policy framework for life-course immunisation globally is published by FIP today. In April 2024, the federation hosted a policy development summit to focus on the growing role of pharmacy in vaccinations, and to describe and define the parameters for the implementation of a FIP global policy on life-course immunisation. Over two days, experts and representatives from a selection of countries with experience of pharmacists as vaccinators shared their knowledge, expertise and country case studies in several focus areas: new and emerging vaccines; the wider benefits of vaccines; vaccine remuneration models; vaccine confidence; and access to data and vaccination records. The insights, data, expertise and experiences shared during the summit are presented in the new report, available here 👉www.fip.org/file/6039 Nicolas Echement Magali Van Steenkiste Olivier Rozaire Ema Paulino Erminia Pietrobono Elen Jones Shelita Dattani, PharmD mark koziol Alison Jones Jeltje Luinenburg

Vaccinations save an estimated 4-5 million lives every year. The widespread use of mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines validated the real-world safety, efficacy and scalability of this technology: as of May 11, 2023, 677 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in the US. Based on learnings from this large-scale vaccine use, IQVIA’s Kevin O'Brien, MD shares five key learnings from the pandemic. https://bit.ly/46bf84c #vaccinations #Covid19

A new FIP campaign to increase awareness and understanding of the benefits of vaccination among vulnerable groups through community pharmacies is launched today. Under the banner “Let’s talk about vaccines!”, FIP has produced a suite of freely available evidence-based materials aimed at pharmacy teams and the public. These provide education on and promote awareness of specific vaccines and highlight the benefits of vaccinations for groups at higher risk from vaccine-preventable diseases, such as older adults, people living with chronic diseases and people who are pregnant. “Pharmacists can play an important role in actively promoting vaccination, building vaccine confidence and increasing vaccine coverage, which leads to benefits to individuals’ health and quality of life, and for our healthcare systems and societies,” said Gonçalo Sousa Pinto, FIP lead for practice development and transformation. The success stories of vaccination are well known to the world’s healthcare community: the immense global health benefits that vaccines and vaccination programs have achieved worldwide, and their future potential. The “frustration stories” are equally familiar. Two particular examples have been in the news recently -- specifically, unmet needs for vaccinations against HPV and cholera. These two examples offer sharper insights into the precise nature of the obstacles to increased immunization. NEWS: 15 pharmacies across Greater Manchester are offering the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to make it quicker and easier for people who have yet to be vaccinated to catch up. The pharmacies from NHS Greater Manchester (NHS GM) join 28 other pharmacies from across the north-west as part of a pilot supporting a national call and recall of under-vaccinated children and to help increase MMR vaccines. The pharmacy scheme follows on from phases one and two of the NHS MMR vaccine catch-up campaign targeting Greater Manchester, West Midlands and London – with these areas more at risk due to the number of people who are not up to date with their MMR vaccinations. 🔗 Read more and find the full list of participating pharmacies here: https://lnkd.in/eRyuybd5 #Measles #GMPrimaryCare #Pharmacy

Every medical intervention comes with both benefits and risks. For vaccinations, the benefits greatly outweigh the consequences of getting the disease. The new COVID-19 vaccines based on mRNA technology are no exception. But one risk associated with them—myocarditis, especially for young men—has raised concerns among the public. A new study published in JAMA has found that the risk associated with getting myocarditis after getting the COVID-19 vaccine is lower than the risk that comes from getting COVID-19. https://lnkd.in/gbUsnyRz #COVID #vaccines #immunizations #publichealth

"In the study period, 9,983,448 vaccinations were administered from batches in the three pre-defined groups. Slightly increased rates of arrhythmia were observed in both study comparisons, HRs 1.25 (95% CI,1.05-1.50) and 1.15 (1.00-1.31), respectively, but sensitivity analyses did not robustly support these associations. For the remaining outcomes, increased rates in both study comparisons were not observed. Conclusion This nationwide cohort study provides reassurance regarding the safety of the BNT162b2 vaccine across different batches used in Denmark. The findings support the overall safety of the vaccine, with no clinically relevant variations in serious adverse event rates between batches." https://lnkd.in/gt72KphR

A comprehensive study from the University of Cambridge, the University of Bristol, and The University of Edinburgh published in Nature Portfolio Communications reveals that COVID-19 vaccinations may reduce the incidence of arterial thromboses, such as heart attacks and strokes. Analyzing health records from 46 million adults, the study found up to a 27% reduction in incidence following the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and up to 20% with the Pfizer/BioNTech SE vaccine. This study, supported by the British Heart Foundation Data Science Centre (Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), reinforces the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccination program, highlighting its protective benefits against severe cardiovascular events.
