Interprofessional collaboration should be standard practice to ensure high quality health services, says a new FIP statement of policy published today. The new policy on interprofessional collaborative practice (IPC) sets out recommendations to a number of stakeholders, including governments, academia and pharmacists. These include that governments should establish professional regulatory systems and processes (including for quality assurance measures and scopes of practice that facilitate effective collaborations). “Effective ICP can lead to improved access to health interventions, reduced burnout among healthcare professionals and better health outcomes,” said Luís Lourenço, co-chair of the policy committee and FIP professional secretary. https://lnkd.in/gkmNiBM4 A reminder to those with an interest in Australian primary health care reform and scope of practice to consider submissions in response to the proposed Unleashing the Potential of Our Health Workforce: Scope of Practice Review reforms. The Issues Paper #2 was released this week and is important reading for those with an interest in health workforce reforms. Some of these proposals include allowing non-medical health professionals to refer to a range of medical specialists under the MBS, and MBS reforms to equalise payments based on the service (eg wound care treatments) rather than the provider.

Trust is the foundation for strong patient-physician relationships that lead to quality, highly individualized care, but research shows that public trust in health care is on the decline. Given the stakes, this moment requires all of us called to practice health care to act with great urgency. In a Modern Healthcare op-ed, The Permanente Federation LLC co-CEOs Maria Ansari, MD, FACC, and Ramin Davidoff, MD, discussed what physicians can do to restore patient trust, including some efforts we’re undertaking at Kaiser Permanente. https://ow.ly/URIQ50QwQnC #healthcare #trust

*SURVEY* 📊 In spring 2024, we interviewed patients and their associations as well as health care providers, those responsible for patient contacts at companies, government agencies and hospitals about the value of #patientassociations. Four main conclusions from our survey 👀: 🤝 Patients and healthcare providers think patient associations should be equal partners in healthcare. 💡 Healthcare providers are less familiar with the services patient associations can provide to patients, medical practice or health policy, but they consider them very important. 🚀 Patients and healthcare providers are convinced that patients guided by patient associations will have faster and better health outcomes. 💰 Most respondents agree that patient associations should be given the resources to play their role in a quality manner. There’s no healthcare relationship more important than the one you have with your primary care provider. We know that when primary care appointments are hard to get, people don’t get the care they need. We know that patients’ health suffers as a result, with minor issues turning into serious conditions due to a lack of care. We know this is an unacceptable state of affairs, and we are working to solve it in Washington. Writing in the Tri-City Herald, Kinwell Medical Group President Dr. Mack Hinson, MD, MSc details the challenges that a shortage of primary care physicians poses, especially in rural areas, and what healthcare providers and organizations are doing to address this issue. https://bit.ly/3BYbMqb

Building healthier communities requires the healthcare system to provide easy access to primary care. Today, though, too many places in Washington are experiencing a shortage of primary care providers, robbing people of the opportunity to establish strong relationships with a clinician they know and trust. KinwellHealth and Premera Blue Cross understand how important those relationships are, and we’re working to make it easier for patients to connect with providers. See my article in the Tri-City Herald to learn about the work we’re doing to bring about change: https://lnkd.in/gN4fiBmK
