⚽️ CURVEBALLS ⚽️ Earlier this year, I was presenting at Armed Forces Day in Plymouth 🇬🇧 Plymouth is a military city, so AFD is quite a big deal in this town with the day attended by literally thousands. My job on the day was to introduce all the acts and displays, and just generally add a bit of hype and excitement – Nice and simple 👌 One of the main attractions every year at AFD is the Field Gun Run – a display carried out by a crew where the field gun and its equipment are transported through a series of obstacles in the shortest time possible. It’s a real feat of strength and endurance and people LOVE to see it, so as the event approached, the crowds were forming around the main arena, full of anticipation. Therefore, when I was told just one hour before the event that in a vigorous training session the night prior, the field gun crew had actually BROKEN THE GUN and were unable to perform the display, mild panic set in. 😱 What could I do to fill that 20-minute slot in the programme? A suggestion was made – “How about you interview the crew instead?” Cue the quickest and most furious research piece ever carried out on the subject of the Naval Field Gun Run and its 100+ year history, plus a quick 1-1 with the (also slightly panicked) crew captain. The result – we pulled it off rather well! I kept the audience in mind, asking questions I thought the crowd would enjoy and most importantly, we all remained professional and in control. A good presenter needs to be able to think on their feet. Not just ducking those curveballs but kicking them right back into the top corner of the opposite net 🥅⚽️ #presenting #curveballs #compere #plymouth 🎤

🌟 Introducing Range Day 🌟 A new platform designed for manufacturers who seek to break through the noise of the industry during SHOT Show and put their products directly in the hands of end users through live fire demonstrations. At the range, rather than the tradeshow floor, is where the defense industry's business should be conducted. This setting allows the development of new functions and features to truly shine, enabling critical aspects such as shootability and reliability to be felt and tested. I want to extend a huge thank you to all of our early adopting partners who are making this a reality. Over 50 forward-thinking manufacturers are set to showcase both new and existing products, cultivate new relationships, and strengthen old ones. This group includes some of the industry’s most influential and innovative companies, known for constantly pushing the envelope in terms of innovation. This event will attract thousands of attendees, representing all segments of the defense industry. From domestic and international military personnel to law enforcement professionals, accredited media and influencers, retailers and distributors, civilians, and of course, our members at PrairieFire and The Staccato Ranch. I'm thrilled to see how this event is taking shape, and I can't wait to witness the positive impact it will have on the industry for years to come! Canadian Firearms Licenses: A History POL (Possession Only License): Introduced as a way for people to legally possess firearms they already owned, the POL did not allow for the acquisition of new firearms. This license is no longer valid; it was phased out in 2015. If a POL was valid at the time, it was automatically converted to a PAL. However, expired POLs required the holder to take the PAL course to regain licensing. FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate): This was the licensing system used in Canada from 1977 to 1995. The FAC is also no longer valid and was replaced by the PAL, the current standard for firearm ownership in Canada. PAL (Possession Acquisition License): This is the primary license for firearm ownership in Canada today, required for owning or acquiring new firearms. The PAL is valid for five years and only requires renewal upon expiration without needing to retake the course. Obtaining and Maintaining a PAL To apply for a PAL, individuals must successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC), a requirement mandated by the RCMP. The course, which includes a written and practical test, takes eight hours, and a passing score of 80% is required. The CFSC covers topics such as firearm safety, handling, and identification.
