Our participants of the 47th UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate Course on Environmental Management for Developing Countries have joined us in Dresden, Germany, to begin a six-month adventure of learning about key issues in sustainability and environmental management. The course will follow an integrated and interdisciplinary approach in line with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, covering several topics such as conservation and restoration ecology, water and atmosphere, soil and land resources, sustainable urban and regional development, waste management, circular economy, renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change and natural resource governance. An overarching science-policy interface frames all disciplines. In addition, all participants will receive training in basic cross-sectoral skills such as policy advice, presentation skills, project planning and management that can be applied in their local contexts, as well as communication across disciplines and cultures, participatory governance practices, and understanding geospatial information. As the participants are already experts and leaders in public governance and administration at the national, regional and local levels, with overall competence in environmental matters, we are confident that the new knowledge gained will contribute to individual and institutional capacity building in their home countries. Together, we look forward to creating waves of positive environmental change and putting the Sustainable Development Goals into action! The training is funded by the Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz (BMUV) (German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection) through the Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency as a contribution to the UN Environment Programme and is supported by UNESCO. We are grateful to the facilitators of this course: https://lnkd.in/dZcCmjmY #UNEP #UNESCO #BMUV #UBA #TUD #CIPSEM #environmentalmanagement #Parisagreement #globalgoals #scholarship #SDGs #sustainability

Well friends, here we go. For the next week I’m on assignment in Nairobi joining the @UNEP communications team as their newest photographer for the 6th Session of the UN Environment Assembly (#UNEA6). Honestly, I thought I was joining the team as the rookie – it’s my first time working direct for UNEP and I was convinced I’d be the weakest link. You can imagine my surprise when on Friday (also my birthday), I was told I’m actually the ‘principal’ photographer, assigned directly to the Executive Director and covering all the high-level events. It’s a huge compliment (and responsibility), but to be seen and valued in this way had me beaming all weekend. So what’s UNEA about? UNEA is the highest-level decision-making body on the environment. It helps set priorities for global environmental policies, develop international environmental law, catalyse intergovernmental action and contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). Essentially, UNEA aims to help restore harmony between humanity and nature, and to improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. UNEA-6 will specifically focus on how #multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of #climatechange, #biodiversity loss, and #pollution, and it’s an opportunity for governments, civil society, the scientific community and private sector to shape global environmental policy. I’ve covered UNEA before and it’s tough. There are plenary sessions, ministerial dialogues, side events, bilateral meetings, press conferences, and much more. As a colleague said, ‘it’s nice to be working under extreme pressure with all of you,’ which pretty much sums it up! Our media producer says the main objective is to ‘capture colour’ – the diversity of participants, the moments of consultation, the things that happen in-between. Essentially, to capture what multilateralism looks like in action, which is just about my favourite thing to do. So here we go. It’s a new assignment, a new role, a new trip around the sun, and we’re starting under my beloved full moon. So indeed, if there was ever a time for new beginnings, today is definitely the day. #ForPeopleForPlanet #livingfiercely

Today is the World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Media, journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. Our colleague Lejla Softić wrote an interesting and engaging blog post on the role of media in just transition in #Bosnia and Herzegovina. She interviewed Mirza Kusljugic from think-thank RESET and Semir Hambo from the most-read BH portal Klix.ba. Key takeaways: ➡ Media is crucial in shaping public perception ➡ Systematic cooperation on the strategic aspects of the transition is absent ➡ Media reporting primarily focuses on problems without highlighting essential opportunities and possibilities for solving challenges Some of the the opportunities for improvement involve: 📚 Establishing a comprehensive database of sources and literature to aid reporting 🤝 Strengthening cooperation between the media, governmental and non-governmental sectors 📌 Showcasing concrete examples of the impact of energy transition on local communities ⚡ Offering expert assistance in data interpretation and analysis 💡 Emphasizing the benefits of energy transition for citizens, including improvements in quality of life and economic prospects. #BiHSuTra Sida #Bosnia and Herzegovina Bernardas Padegimas Anneli Sundin Bora Hajdini SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute Admir Softic Johanna Lehtmets The blog is part of the project Bosnia and Herzegovina Sustainable Transition (BiH SuTra). 🌍 Today marks the release of the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2023/24 (ESDR), a collaborative effort by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), SDSN Europe, and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). 🚀 📜 The ESDR 2023/24 report underscores the urgency for decisive actions within the EU to avert irreversible environmental and social tipping points. It serves as a stark reminder of the commitment needed to fulfil the promise of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. 📈 As we approach the EU elections in June 2024, the incoming European Parliament leaders hold a crucial role in shaping the next EU seven-year budget (2028-2035) and steering the global sustainable development agenda beyond 2030. In the face of a fragmented world, EU leadership is requiring a more ambitious, integrated, and coherent approach to fast-track SDG implementation domestically and globally. 📢 Complementing the ESDR 2023/24 report, a coalition of 200+ scientists, experts, and practitioners from 25 European countries has released a joint Call for Action. Addressed to political parties and future EU leaders, this call urges the laying of foundations for a new European Deal for the Future, outlining ten priority actions. Explore the full report and join the call for transformative action to secure a sustainable future for all. 📈🌐 #Sustainability #ESDR2023_24 #SDGs #EUleadership

Useful independent summary of the #SIDS4 conference by the International Institute for Sustainable Development Earth Negotiations Bulletin. I haven't yet processed all of my thoughts after a hectic week, and months of work by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) leading up to this, but certainly the real work lies ahead for the Caribbean and other SIDS to lead our own development. But the challenge is too big for governments alone. SIDS civil society must be recognised and supported as key partners in a whole of society approach to delivering sustainable development - by SIDS, with SIDS, for SIDS!

Two busy weeks in Geneva are today and tomorrow concluded with the historic intersessional meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, where UN member states and Indigenous Peoples’ delegates are in dialogue about the enhancement of Indigenous Peoples’ participation in the UN. With the mandates based on the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, UN resolutions, including the resolution passed after the high-level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly in 2014 known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, this process takes its point of departure on the call of Indigenous Peoples that the UN must “recognize Indigenous Peoples and nations based on their original free existence, inherent sovereignty and the right of self-determination in international law”. This call was made by consensus by the more than 500 delegates of Indigenous Peoples from all seven socio-cultural regions of the world in the so-called Alta Outcome Document passed at Indigenous Peoples’ preparatory meeting prior to the World Conference. Indigenous Peoples furthermore called for the UN system to “enable direct participation through Indigenous Peoples’ own Governments and parliaments; their own Governments include traditional councils and authorities”. Although the UN has not equitably ensured the participation of Indigenous Peoples’ own governing bodies yet, Indigenous Peoples have contributed substantively to the development of UN instruments within human rights, climate action, biodiversity, environmental protection and much, much more. Indigenous Peoples have not only paved their way into negotiations, accredited as or through NGOs, and some through member states, but been the drivers of important developments in international relations, for example in the Arctic Council, and in UN entities such as the Facilitative Working Group under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. This has happened for the benefit of all humanity. Indigenous Peoples’ contributions demonstrate why it is important, not only for Indigenous Peoples, but for the UN and humanity in general, that Indigenous Peoples are ensured equitable participation – not as NGOs but through their own governing bodies. I am happy to be here in Geneva - as Chair of Inuit Circumpolar Council - and as member of the Indigenous Coordinating Body - to further advance this process. Inuit Circumpolar Council is one of the organisations that have contributed substantially to this process, from negotiations on the UN Declaration to the very start of the enhanced participation process in Alta in 2013. The meeting can be followed and the recording seen on UN Web TV: 👉🏽 https://t.co/7KswX3nem7 Inuit Circumpolar Council, Greenland 📸 Members of the Indigenous Coordinating Body meeting with members of the UN Permanent Forum, UN Geneva July 2024.
