In September, the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars wrapped up their inaugural season in brand-new Meritus Park, located in the heart of their downtown. Visit Hagerstown, the region's tourism promotion agency, engaged Firefly Outdoor + Economics to help analyze visitation during the first season. Our analysis revealed widespread economic benefit to the Hagerstown area, including patronage of local businesses and overnight stays in hotels. The data will help Visit Hagerstown and their stakeholders articulate the economic benefits of the stadium, better hone their marketing and--in subsequent seasons--track changes to visitation over time, as they implement new initiatives and reach new audiences. We're grateful to Visit Hagerstown and the Flying Boxcars for allowing us to help them reflect on the inaugural season!

In 2019, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) unveiled its sensory space, Presley's Place, setting the standard for travel accessibility across the United States. When PIT employee Jason Rudge noticed an opportunity for the airport to make travel easier for his autistic son and other travelers alike, CEO Christina Cassotis took action. This year marks Presley's Place's fifth anniversary, and many public places have followed suit after its inception. The amount of success you see in some hospitality business for a calendar year can be dependent on the weather. It makes sense right, a ski resort will not do well if there is a lack of snow. For us here, it will be just rain, sometimes lots of it. Golfers are a hardy bunch, many will play through even torrential rain but we draw a line to stop all games amd get the marshalls to bring everyone in when there is forecasted lightning and thunderstorms. The same thing for a water theme park too, will will close a water theme park even halfway through operations when there is forecasted lightning. Golfers who play halfway or less will be given something we call a rain check. The value of a rain check is usually the prorated amount of unplayed holes. For theme parks, the refund policy will vary depending on what time and how long we close the water theme park.
