Important article about British Columbia's Okanagan Mountain Park wildfire in 2003 and how it acted as a turning point in the way future fires were addressed by governments, firefighting agencies, and the insurance industry. "More than 27,000 people were evacuated and 239 Kelowna-area homes destroyed," reports Jason Contant. The major loss and financial impact highlighted some things that needed to change within the system long term. Now that we're seeing massive wildfires in Canada that actually exceed the damage done in this Okanagan Mountain Park fire, we need to make sure that we have the proper systems and resources in place to mitigate as much damage as possible. Definitely worth the read! #InsuranceIndustry #ClimateChange #PropertyDamage

The Colorado Springs Fire Department leads the way with their wildfire mitigation program, but it takes a village (or in this case, a whole city!) to truly be prepared. Here are 5 key lessons we can all learn: 1. Home is Where the Hearth Isn't: Focus on creating a fire-resistant zone around your home. This means clearing flammable materials like leaves, branches, and dead plants within 30 feet of your house. Consider fire-resistant landscaping options and maintain a clean roof free of debris. 2. Be a Good Neighbor: Talk to your neighbors about creating a wildfire preparedness plan together. This can include sharing resources, creating defensible space buffers between properties, and having a communication plan in case of an evacuation. 3. Know Your Resources: The Colorado Springs Fire Department offers a wealth of information on their website, including free home inspections and mitigation tips. Don't hesitate to reach out and learn more! [Refer to local department website or resources here] 4. Be Firewise: Stay informed about local fire restrictions and weather conditions. Be mindful of activities that could spark a fire, like using fireworks or improperly disposing of cigarettes. 5. Prepare an Evacuation Plan: Have a plan in place for how you and your family will evacuate in case of a wildfire. This includes having a designated meeting place and an emergency kit stocked with essentials like food, water, and medications. By working together, we can all be part of the solution and create a more fire-resistant community. Let's make wildfire safety a priority! #WildfireMitigation #FireSafety #ColoradoSprings #CommunityPreparedness #BeFirewise #elclubdecomerciantes #evideosecurity #hugihernandez #egreenews #inergency
