This is a picture of the last day my research partner in crime, Lynn “Penny” Morris, and I worked together. I’ve learned so many valuable lessons during our time together that have shaped me into the person and professional I am today. 👩🏼🔬👩🏽🔬🧫🧪🔬 1) Never underestimate the power of a hard working, caring, and passionate research team. 🙌🏾 None of us can do it alone, and the skills that we leverage together are what makes us great at what we do. 2) Never underestimate the power of kindness, compassion, and treat everyone you encounter with the respect and dignity that they deserve. 💜 We never know what the future brings… 3) Don’t ever take for granted the people that support you and cheer you on during the days when you aren’t so sure about yourself, your purpose, and the direction you are headed. 📣 4) Laughter is the best medicine! 💊 🤣🤭😂 Lynn Morris and I worked in research for close to 15 years together, and a total of 4 jobs during that time. And that's one of the reasons I created Consult List: to offer a quick and efficient way to manage your referral contacts and save time connecting prospective clients that you can't help to colleagues with availability. If we want to see change, and stand up for our field, we need to start offering better referral options when people reach out to us and our caseload is full. After no-callbacks, or sifting through endless directories with no luck, therapy seekers give up and go with the "easy" option... a company spending millions on advertising and preying on people who don't know what they are getting into. Storytime! When I was in residency, one of the untold aspects was that to be the best doctor I could be for my patients, I learned to silence my own emotions. It's not a lack of empathy; it's leaving my emotions on the door. Sometimes, I would walk from a room that just welcomed a newborn miracle to another where I must deliver a cancer diagnosis. The emotional whiplash is real. In those 3.5 seconds between doors, I've learned to leave one set of emotions behind and prepare for the next. It's not easy, but it's for the sake of my patients.
