The #JasperWildfire is not a once-in a-life-time event. Record-breaking wildfires are becoming the norm every summer, across the country. All orders of government must focus on adapting to the realities of climate change and preparing for the next inevitable wildfire. It's time to safe-guard our communities by mandating and investing in wildfire protection for buildings and infrastructure. We have everything to lose. 🔥 Extreme wildfires are on the rise in the United States. Over the last three decades, the number of large wildfires and the extent of area burned have significantly increased. The ten years characterised by the largest burned area have all occurred in the past 20 years. This has already caused unprecedented losses for people, communities, and the environment. 🌎 As climate change is expected to further amplify these challenges going forward, scaling up wildfire prevention and climate change adaptation is critical. How are the United States’ policies and practices evolving to tackle this challenge? How is the country boosting climate adaptation efforts to reduce wildfire risk? 👉 Find out in the new case study just released by the OECD - OCDE and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) ➡ https://oe.cd/us-wildfires #Wildfires | #ClimateAdaptation | #ClimateChange | #US | #RiskPrevention Marta Arbinolo Catherine Desiree Gamper Walid OUESLATI Ágnes Szuda Dávid Munka Madeleine Rubenstein

The new OECD case study on #wildfires in the United States is out! It has been a true pleasure to lead the development of this study in close collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and a great team at the OECD Environment. The paper shows that the frequency and severity of extreme wildfires are on the rise in the United States and reviews the policies implemented by federal, state and local governments across the country to adapt to growing wildfire risk in the context of #ClimateChange. Have you taken a peek at our Climate Adaptation Toolkit? 🌍 We’ve been experiencing unprecedented amounts of water on our reserves this winter, and we would like to thank all our visitors for their patience, particularly during reserve closures. Climate change is unfortunately increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events in the UK, and that includes flooding and droughts. The good news is there are many simple and positive ways to prepare for our changing weather, including: 📝 Developing a climate adaptation plan for your local community 🏠 Installing property flood resilience measures ☔ Adding rain gardens and water butts to your outside spaces We have a climate adaptation toolkit full of advice for communities, which is available to download from our website. Minister of Climate Change, Simon Watts, announces take-two on a cross-party inquiry for #ClimateAdaptation. 📆 An inquiry was first launched in 2023 but was unfortunately left incomplete at the end of the previous government. 📃 The 150 submissions on the previous inquiry will be carried forward and considered by the committee. It is also likely that public submissions will be open for this 2nd round. 👥 The review is being undertaken by the Finance and Expenditure Committee due to its representation of all parties, reinforcing Watts's notion of creating an "enduring and long-term approach". ⌛ It is expected that the committee will report back in September 2024 with the goal of introducing legislation in early 2025. 🗣 Comments and support for the motion came from both sides of the house recently, with Megan Woods noting, "Climate impacts will affect everyone. Climate change and the wild and weird weather it brings know no partisan politics. So it makes sense to support work on adaptation across the House." We will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to submit on this critical piece of work for Aotearoa.
National MP for North Shore | Minister of Climate Change & Revenue 🇳🇿 Auth by S Watts, 1 Earnoch Ave, Takapuna
Pleased to share that we’ve announced an inquiry will be conducted to help prepare our communities for the impacts of climate change. Damaging natural weather events such as floods, storms and landslips are becoming more frequent and severe. That’s why we are working with parties across the House in creating a long lasting and enduring adaptation framework - to help New Zealanders continue to enjoy their way of life, and to rebuild an economy that protects our people, communities, industries, and environment.
