Did You Know? On February 21st, 1887, Oregon played an important part in United States history by becoming the first state to recognize Labor Day as an official public holiday. Though the holiday had already been gaining support amongst labor activists in the early 1880s, it was Oregon that took the big step in giving the day official recognition. #LaborDay #OregonHistory #UnitedStatesHistory #PublicHoliday #LaborActivists #USLaborHistory #AmericanHistory #LaborRights #WorkersRights #LaborMovement #LaborUnions #USHistoryFacts #HistoricalFacts #OregonState #LaborDayHistory #LaborDayCelebration #LaborDayWeekend #LaborDay2021 #LaborDayWeekend2021 #LaborDayUSA #NationalHoliday #WorkingClassHistory #SocialJustice #WorkersSolidarity #LaborDayFacts #LaborDayTrivia

Listen to Rebecca Dixon share how jobs and the structure of the labor market shape our lives, society, and democracy. Her blend of wisdom and practical insights point the way to what must be done to build a world where all can flourish. TY Anum Qadir and the The Bridgespan Group team for bringing this to us. Anum Qadir: "What is something considered radical that should not be?" Rebecca Dixon: "That every human has dignity..." Yes. Just, yes. Listen. https://lnkd.in/g2ajnB7U

Disappointed to not see more of my Australian Labor Party colleagues nor other federal and state elected parliamentary legislators at #freeandequal listening to human rights representatives from all walks of life speaking on an Australian Human Rights framework and their experiences and areas of expertise. If legislators aren't listening to those who are prepared to speak for their rights and human rights for all to protect our people, who are you representing if not us and those who risk their own safety to speak up and out against abuses against themselves and others? Can legislators answer me, do you only represent non-minorities and emboldened power structures culpable in discrimination and human rights abuses? Anthony Albanese Bill Shorten Andrew Giles Penny Wong Mark Butler Tanya Plibersek Katy Gallagher Amanda Rishworth I'll single out Bill Shorten. If you make the claim repeatedly that you are listening to disabled voices and stand for the value and quality of our lives and our #equality, then, WHERE THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU? Because the voiceless and disempowered are not heard or seen, whos lives are not valued, who have no rights nor who EVER feel respected and listed to are here. Often at great risk, requiring extensive organisation and support and, after overcoming more barriers to participation than you could possibly understand, they are here to speak, when we haven't been allowed to speak, ever, let alone be heard, and we hear that every moment of every day of our lives. We Are Here. Where are you? Why are you not here to be seen by disabled people and the broader community to show you are listening and to model that conduct in your social role of responsibility? Where is the minister in represention of people with disability when disabled people speak on their experiences and rights in Australia? We overcome extensive oppression and discrimination to speak against our oppression and for our community and yet, I don't see you here to hear our voices or those who put themselves forward and often commit their lives to speak for us? Why are you not here to listen? Bill Shorten WHERE are you?
"While we commit to our domestic human rights challenges today, I ask that we begin today by acknowledging the devastation felt around the world. Through quiet pause comes reflection." Below is a write-up on the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights that I did on the 75th anniversary of the declaration that happened on December 10, 2023. The declaration has continued to be a key linchpin and guidepost post the second world war.

10 December is #HumanRights Day. In 2023, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Human Rights Day seeks to increase knowledge on the universality and indivisibility of human rights, and inspire people to create a movement of shared humanity, while empowering them to fight for their rights and take action. December 10 is known as Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. As a peacebuilding organization, upholding the human rights and dignity of all individuals and uplifting those who often have their human rights challenged is one of our core values. Part of building and advancing peace is understanding how we can work to ensure that no one is left behind or excluded in the expression and experience of human rights. How are you recognizing Human Rights Day today?
