Data Systems Analyst at Girling Health Care of New York / PhD Student in Global Leadership at Indiana Tech / If Autism is on a spectrum, then so are our talents!
Hello everyone, After last week's presentation, I've been thinking about doing others in the future. The Zoom link I used for the presentation is mine for the rest of the year, so it would make sense to at least consider it. What I'm thinking is this: A presentation for Autism Appreciation Month, with a date and time to be determined, that will be based on the article I will be writing for April 2nd. I could theoretically limit the connection to a certain group of people, but I think combining the discussion of the article with a continuation of the planned research might be good for a 40-45 minute run. What do you think? Let me know in the comments. #newpresentation #autismawareness #zoom #autismappreciationmonth #continuation #academicresearch

🤔 Have you ever marveled at how children pick up on the natural progression of daily activities? 📊 Most children grasp and learn the typical flow of daily tasks automatically from watching others, but autistic children may need more direct instruction. Kenna McEvoy outlines how video modeling can help with this. 👉 Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3ut2pM1 💻 Have you used video modeling effectively for teaching new skills to an autistic child? Number 2 of 5 WAYS TO CELEBRATE AUTISTIC PRIDE DAY "Recognized on June 18th, Autistic Pride Day celebrates the unique strengths, talents, and experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum. This day is celebrated as an autistic community event: it originated from and is still led by people with autism, and serves as a powerful reminder to promote acceptance, understanding, and inclusion. #2. Attend Autistic Pride Day Events: Look for local Autistic Pride Day events in your community and attend them. These gatherings offer opportunities to meet individuals on the spectrum, learn from their experiences, and celebrate their accomplishments. By actively participating, you can get to know people in the community." Can't find one- create one, see a need, fill a need. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/ek9cDxWF

Visiting schools in the second part of the summer term I can definitely feel a shift in the environment! There’s a lot of buzz and excitement in the air, lots of great opportunities and chances to celebrate. But what about those students who can detect the slightest change and now the whole school is suddenly an entirely different place to be? Those students for whom routine, consistency and predictability are key to their success and engagement in school? For my own son, the summer term means longer and (usually) HOTTER days! So his sensory needs are already greatly increased as his interoception skills are under responsive. He’s aware change is coming, he’s excited to spend more time at home but he misses the routines of school. The thought of his class being different or changing to a different teacher. The transition from spring to summer, the transition from school to home for 6 whole weeks. Lots of non-uniform days so school FEELS different. It’s important to acknowledge that for some young people the summer term is actually a really difficult time. Although we may want to celebrate their successes over the year and provide them with some wonderful opportunities, it’s important to invite them along for the changes and be pro-active in planning in additional support and genuine choices to ensure support remains child-centred. Celebration assemblies and attendance awards are a whole other topic of discussion! Would love to hear others thoughts or experiences around this!
🎉 End-of-year activities like celebrations, assemblies, and sports days can be exciting for many, but for students with SEND, they can also be incredibly overwhelming. As an autism mum, I’ve seen how the build-up to these events, and the change to routine can cause anxiety and dysregulation. My son found the lead up to the summer hard enough with the thought of no school routines over the holidays, the thought of different classes or teachers upon his return, saying goodbye, warmer weather too, without all the additional changes to the school day that happens in the lead up. It’s crucial to proactively support these students by offering sensory breaks, providing genuine choices including the ability to opt out, or alternative activities that suit their needs. Understanding and preparation can make these days more manageable and enjoyable for everyone. Let’s create inclusive environments where every child feels safe and supported, and empowered to celebrate in their own way 💕 What would your top tips for supporting SEND pupils through end of year school changes be?? #SENDSupport #InclusiveEducation #UnderstandingSEND #Endofterm #transitionanxiety #DerbySEND #supportingchange #sensory
