Thank you to everyone who donated their sports equipment at this year’s Equipment Drive!

Today, 680 The Fan handed off the gear collected at our 2nd Annual First Horizon Bank Equipment Drive to the folks at Double Play Atlanta. This has quickly become one of my favorite Events, as inflation has made it even harder for children coming from underserved communities to afford the equipment needed to participate in certain sports. It was also great to see the looks on the kid's faces at a "real radio station" was broadcasting from their Little League Parks! First Horizon Bank—Events like this are wonderful and a great way to provide community support. Sports provide so much more beyond athletics and being active—there are so many life lessons that can be learned through athletic competition, even within a recreational setting. As indicated in the original posting, it is difficult for some families—in underserved communities—to provide opportunities to participate in sports due to costs. This impact is even more significant when it comes to adaptive sports (wheelchair football, wheelchair basketball, adaptive track and field, para-swimming, etc.). It would be wonderful to see similar efforts centered around adaptive sports, i.e., wheelchair tires, replacement tubes, air pumps, bike helmets (for racing chair track athletes/hand cyclists), etc. While it would potentially be cost-prohibitive to provide an actual sports chair drive (as sports chairs can range between $2,5000 and $5,000 plus) - providing the "little" things can go a long way.
