🔥 News Alert: BC has launched a new funding program to bolster community resilience against natural disasters such as floods, droughts, extreme heat, landslides, and more. Introducing the Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding (DRIF) program! Although it does not cover wildfire risk, (handled separately by the Ministry of Forests' Community Resiliency Investment Program), we wanted to share this exciting update with you all! The DRIF program will allocate $40 million over two years to support First Nation and local government projects focusing on climate-driven hazard mitigation. In its first year, approximately $15 million will be available, increasing to $25 million in the second year for eligible projects. Projects funded under DRIF will focus on enhancing understanding of risks and risk-reduction measures through structural and non-structural projects. Expressions of Interest for funding consideration in the 2024-25 fiscal year are due by September 15, 2024. For more details, visit: https://lnkd.in/gwCsE_gC #FNWEPtips #ResilientCommunities

FEMA is redirecting federal funding from reactive disaster spending toward research-supported, proactive investment in community resilience. FEMA's Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program invests in a variety of hazard and climate mitigation projects with a focus on infrastructure improvements that benefit traditionally disadvantaged, hazard susceptible communities, promote climate adaption by incorporating nature-based projects and enhancing hazard-resilient building standards. Successful BRIC projects include innovative approaches to public and private partnerships, funding, project design and multiple community benefits. https://lnkd.in/ercc-Mkg

Have you heard about the new improvements FEMA is making to the Benefit-Cost Analysis criteria? Here’s what Carlos J. Castillo, Tidal Basin’s President of Federal Services, had to say about it: "With FEMA's recent updates to the Benefit-Cost Analysis criteria, I see a positive shift in how we approach disaster preparedness and mitigation. By reducing the discount rate and streamlining the grant process for smaller projects, FEMA is making it easier for a wider array of initiatives to move forward. These changes will help ensure that more communities can effectively enhance their resilience against the inevitable challenges posed by natural disasters." Flooding is a global problem and locally, many areas are taking steps to prepare for potential flooding. San Francisco is taking a proactive approach by seeking funding to raise an area 7' to protect the community. The proposed cost of $13BN is certainly not cheap, but completion is set for 2040. This raises the question: what happens during the 15 years it takes to complete? Recent King Tides in the area are currently happening with more rainfall expected mid-week. In the meantime, consider the FloodFlash policy to see how we can help immediately. #floodpreparedness #climatechange #SanFrancisco

12 months after the Kimberley floods, WALGA supports and applauds the State and Federal assistance in reconstructing the Fitzroy River Bridge. The new bridge is six times stronger and significantly longer than the old one, rebuilt to a more resilient standard intended to better withstand future natural disasters. WALGA encourages a continued commitment to build back better through our State Budget Submission, calling for $10 million per annum from 2024-2025 as a reserve fund for the disaster-resilient reconstruction of impacted essential public assets. Investing in resilient reconstruction and building back better essential public assets will significantly benefit WA, helping communities to better withstand and recover from disasters and reduce the long-term costs to Local, State and Commonwealth Governments. TRULY BIBLICAL I share the applause of what the State and Federal governments have achieved in Fitzroy Crossing following a recent dash to Halls Creek. You can still see pockets of wreckage strewn along parts of the roadside. The weather event was truly biblical! However, the extremity and frequency of these extreme weather events are becoming more and more common. Local governments need to engage with our state and federal counterparts. We need to review and overhaul our insurance schemes and financial assistance packages significantly bolstering the kitty for build back better well beyond a $10m annual investment. When State and Federal governments are hinting at returning a surplus in the upcoming budget forecasts what better place to reinvest than protecting our region from the extreme ravages of climate change and the devastating impact on regional infrastructure. Let’s bump that $10m into something more meaningful for the regions.
