Happy Labor Day! Today, we recognize and honor the time, dedication, and energy that goes into doing your job and contributing to the American workforce. It takes advocating and organizing to secure and keep the rights, holidays, and privileges from which we benefit. People had to go on strike to make today happen. Labor Day: Honoring Our Workforce and Its Evolution Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday in September, is a tribute to the achievements and contributions of American workers. Established in the late 19th century, it recognizes the labor movement’s efforts to secure better working conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours. Today, Labor Day is more than just a long weekend; it’s a reminder of the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights. This extends to all industries, including lawn care and landscaping, which play a crucial role in maintaining our environment and beautifying our communities. These workers face unique challenges, from seasonal work to the physical demands of the job, highlighting the importance of fair labor practices and safety standards in the green industry. Labor Day encourages us to reflect on these shifts and advocate for a balanced work-life while recognizing the value of all workers, including those in lawn care and landscaping. It’s a day to honor progress and continue striving for equitable, dignified work environments for all.

Happy Labor Day! When labor day started in 1894. It was celebrated as a non-national holiday earlier than that and the very first Labor Day was created by unions striking. At the time, in 1890, the average manufacturing worker toiled in a factory 60 hours a week. This was down from the average of 70 in the 1830s. Some of you are reading that in shock, if you've ever worked a farm you aren't. I wrote about Work/Life integration last week. This is part of that. Labor Day is no longer about trade unions and extremely long hours (seems that fight was won long ago). If you do happen to work all the time, use this as an opportunity to take some time and enjoy the fruits of your labor. I try and practice this with my team where during our quarterly planning we review everything we accomplished in the previous quarter before looking to the new one. This is necessary if you're like me and the tendency is to always look at what's not done. It's healthy to look back and celebrate the ground taken. You work hard. Take a break, look around, enjoy the results of your work.

Have we lost the spirit of Labor Day? Today Labor Day is no longer about trade unionists marching down the street with banners and their tools of trade. Instead, it is a confused holiday with no associated rituals. The original holiday was meant to handle a problem of long working hours and no time off. Although the battle over these issues would seem to have been won long ago, this issue is starting to come back with a vengeance, not for manufacturing workers but for highly skilled white-collar workers, many of whom are constantly connected to work. If you work all the time and never really take a vacation, start a new ritual that honors the original spirit of Labor Day. Give yourself the day off. Don’t go in to work. Shut off your phone, computer and other electronic devices connecting you to your daily grind. Then go to a barbecue, like the original participants did over a century ago, and celebrate having at least one day off from work during the year!
