Build something that’s not scalable! At the start, you don’t want to focus on automation and scale. Think about growth… Do the things that are not scalable! Andy Fang, DoorDash's co-founder and CFO, picks up and delivers food orders to customers—not scalable! But he learns about the customer experience. "We started as delivery drivers" This is the DoorDash application to YC in 2014. Today, it's market cap is $46.5B. I love this because it underscores that especially in the beginning, just simple brute force is often the best & only way to go. There is no system, no algorithm, no process, etc It is not effortless. In fact, it's all effort. When we started CB Insights, the first 50,000 financing and M&A transactions were done by hand in a giant spreadsheet. It was just manually copy/pasting data about transactions from various sources into rows & columns. We could have waited to find an engineer who could automate that or we could just get going. And the reality was that those 50,000 rows served as invaluable training data for eventual algorithms we used to automate that data extraction effort. 💡Never forget that while your Product (combined with GTM) generally “makes” you in the world of Consumer, your Customer Success team plays an equally (if not more) important role in ensuring that scale doesn’t break you 💡 And in this new era of AI, this fact cannot be underscored more 👀 Post a a string of bizarre and incredibly frustrating DoorDash Support experiences (despite their truly magical Success team in the early days!), our household is seriously considering switching all food delivery to Uber 🌯🥗🍔🍕 As millennial yuppies, this equates to *thousands* of dollars of annual spend up for grabs. Multiply this by several years, and losing dedicated customers comes at a HUGE cost to consumer cos 💰 With almost every consumer company currently evaluating where and how AI will be incorporated into their platforms, the margin for error in many consumer-facing categories (like Success) will be SLIM 📏 As the tech train leaves the station in the direction of automation, we are most certainly in for an interesting adventure ahead! 🚆
