Here's what's new on FSFP's blog — an article from one of our long-time consultants, Becky Lyons. She talks about the importance of identifying a "change ambassador,” someone who champions data initiatives that may challenge the status quo and help support turning your conceptual plans into tangible change. Becky says that an executive sponsor typically serves as the lead change ambassador. This data program influencer helps promote governance best practices and secure the resources needed to implement them. An executive sponsor's advocacy for robust data governance frameworks ensures alignment with business goals, fosters a culture of compliance, and enhances data quality throughout the organization ... and what's not to love about that! Read the article to learn more about the importance of executive sponsorship in data governance programs: https://lnkd.in/gdwKwBRu For specifics on FSFP's data governance service offering, please visit this page: https://lnkd.in/gjf8gUxY And if you're interested in talking with one of our data governance experts, we're here to help -> https://lnkd.in/g5dDUiah #datagovernance #datamanagement #informationmanagement #changemanagement #organizationalchangemanagement #executivesponsorship #dataquality #datastrategy

The first step to implementing a data governance strategy is identifying who owns what data. You can assess your organization's ability to successfully implement a data governance strategy using a maturity model. This model examines the varying levels of awareness and user buy-in throughout your organization, providing insight into how you should plan to get a strategy off the ground. The standard breaks down into five phases based on the awareness levels within your organization. Maturity level 0: Unaware In this phase, you might not have much support for a governance strategy. Executives may not yet see the need for such an endeavor because existing workarounds are functioning "well enough." At this stage, your best move is consistent and diplomatic advocacy for a better strategy. Point out that the workarounds are only a Band-Aid and that data governance will produce a more reliable result. Maturity level 1: Initial Any processes in place in this phase are likely sporadic and incomplete. Influential individuals realize that more effective policies are necessary to repeat previous successes. It's your role to convince your staff of your strategy's necessity. Maturity level 2: Reactive In this phase, the framework for a comprehensive strategy is more stable. You can implement basic management procedures to prepare your enterprise for the journey of planning a complete governance strategy. Maturity level 3: Proactive Procedures in this phase are increasingly advanced and consistent across your organization. You have a unified approach to managing data, and buy-in has increased substantially. Maturity level 4: Managed Businesses that have reached level four see data governance as an established, necessary part of doing business. There is still room for improvement, but the process is well underway. Maturity level 5: Optimized Your data governance strategy has been in operation for a while. https://lnkd.in/dYJY29ZB #datagovernance #maturitymodel

Ensuring Data Governance success for large manufacturing, retail and FMCG companies | Based in Scandinavia - working globally
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗧 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 When I speak with seasoned Data Governance people, I often hear them say “Well, our governance journey is going well and everything, but it would be so much better if we weren’t stuck here in IT, but instead were closer to the business” There is often a kind of longing for a better and more “pure” world where Data Governance is not buried deep somewhere in IT, but is instead close to the actual decision makers, whispering truths into their ears and driving the strategic change. To me, the question of where in the organization your Data Governance efforts are anchored is really not that important. While the “us and them” divide between IT and the rest of the organization is very real in some companies, it begs the question, “If you don’t want Data Governance in IT, where else should it be”: 🔸 IT has the benefit of being mostly neutral when it comes to how data standards look, whereas many other areas typically are very opinionated. This can make it hard to land a common approach that everyone agrees with. Incidentally this is one of the best arguments against anchoring it in finance. 🔸 Most other business areas may have strong opinions about some kinds of data, but don’t really care about others. For instance, if you work in commercial excellence, you are laser focused on Product- and Customer-data, but supplier- or employee-data is not keeping you up at night. This increases the risk of fracturing your Data Governance approach 🔸 And finally, while some regulated industries may have central quality or process excellence units where Data Governance can potentially slot into, that is not the case in many other industries. Here, IT is one of the few truly cross-organizational support units, making it a good fit for where to locate Data Governance. And a final reason it does not really matter so much is that while the Data Governance team sets guidelines and facilitates, the bulk of the “actual” work happens with the Data Steward and –Owners across the company. This means that most of the important stakeholders are somewhere else anyway, and once you get going on the journey, this is where you will spend your efforts – no matter where in the organization you live. #DataGovernance #OrganizationalDevelopment #DataManagement

Data governance requires more than just technical know-how. It also demands the support and commitment of key stakeholders within an organisation. However, it's not always easy to achieve the necessary support from business leaders and other stakeholders who may not fully grasp the importance of data governance to the organisation. Therefore, we wanted to outline some key ways in which your data governance team could work to get those stakeholders on side. 👉 Have a clear value proposition Emphasise how data governance contributes to data accuracy, reliability and compliance, ultimately leading to valuable BI and better decision making. It can prove very useful to provide examples and case studies to illustrate the positive impact on business outcomes. 👉 Align data objectives with business objectives This demonstrates to stakeholders how data governance supports their business goals. James Phare, in an interview with Data Quality Pro, highlights the value of linking corporate objectives with potential barriers that can only be solved by an effective data governance framework. When stakeholders see a direct link between data governance efforts and overall business success, they are more likely to buy into the initiatives. 👉 Tell stakeholders what's at stake By this, we mean what's at stake if data governance is under-prioritised. Educating stakeholders about the potential pitfalls emphasises the importance of investing in data governance. Nicola Askham suggests sharing your organisation’s data quality horror stories. These provide the best personalised examples of why you need to improve data quality in YOUR organisation rather than using stories from other companies. 👉 Provide examples of success Highlight success stories where data quality improvements led to cost savings, increased efficiency or enhanced customer satisfaction. Real world examples can make the benefits of data governance more tangible and relatable. 👉 Involve stakeholders Demonstrating that their perspectives are valued and considered in the development of data governance practices not only increases their commitment and willingness to support these initiatives but can also lead to insightful input on policies, standards and procedures. By combining these strategies, data governance workers can effectively convey the importance of their initiatives, align them with organisational objectives and garner stakeholder buy in. ✅ #DAMA #DAMAUK #DataManagement #Data #DataGovernance
