Happy to share this one - Published in Journal of Cleaner Production: "How circular is the European photovoltaic industry? Practical insights on current circular economy barriers, enablers, and goals.", together with Roger Nyffenegger, Tadas Radavičius and Manuela Tvaronaviciene. This paper uses insights from 20 interviews with business experts to understand the current state of circular economy in the European PV industry, as well as the challenges and enablers that hinder or boost the CE transition. Our study suggests four major circular practices that are currently being performed along the European PV value chain: (1) reinserting by-products, (2) digitizing the VC, (3) preparing PV modules for reuse, and (4) recycling and material recovery. We would like to thank all the interviewees who shared their knowledge with us and helped us to better understand the vast landscape of European PV companies. On behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office regarding the launch of the Re-X Before Recycling Prize, administered by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. This three-phase competition will award up to $5.6 million in federal funding and technical assistance at DOE’s national laboratories to participants who develop innovations to unlock new or expanded supply chains that can reintegrate end-of-use products into the economy via re-use, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and/or repurposing (collectively called “Re-X”) before recycling. The prize is designed to stimulate innovation and private investment in circular economy approaches that can transform waste streams into diverse, integrated circular supply networks and contribute to a robust, environmentally sustainable economy. It’s been a pleasure to discuss the challenges and opportunities of building resilient supply battery ecosystems with Osher Beveridge Greg Bogie and Tom Meulemans at MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined.
