As a part of educational history, community schools have always existed in some form. The Progressive Movement in education was shaped by community activism, local needs, and aspirations for social progress. Communities influenced the movement through demands for equitable education, responsive schooling practices, and the integration of social services into educational settings. By advocating for child-centered, experiential learning that addressed social inequalities and prepared students for active citizenship, communities and industry played a pivotal role in shaping the educational reforms that define the Progressive Era in American history. From Me To You Consulting is uniquely positioned to cultivate school-business partnerships to generate resources and opportunities for families and students to thrive. 11 Days of 11 Most: Roosevelt High School, Gary, Indiana Constructed in 1930, Theodore Roosevelt High School in Gary is one of only three high schools in Indiana built specifically to serve the educational needs of Black Americans in the Jim Crow era. It was designed by noted architect William B. Ittner and constructed in response to advocacy by Gary’s Black community following large scale protests by white students when the school corporation attempted to racially integrate an existing high school. In its years of operation, Roosevelt has many notable alumni including Olympic boxer Charles Adkins, CBS reporter Emery King, NFL player Gerald Irons, actor Avery Brooks, and members of The Jackson 5. Despite Roosevelt High School’s continued cultural importance to the Black community in Gary, declining enrollment and deferred maintenance led to its closing as a school in 2019 when the heating system failed causing water pipes to burst. This architecturally significant building that once was a center of community life is now sitting unoccupied and vulnerable to crime, vandalism, and arson, which has impacted other vacant structures across Gary, including other historic schools. A coalition including the Gary East Side Community Development Corporation, National Gary Theodore Roosevelt Alumni Association, Indiana Landmarks, and other key partners are exploring feasible reuse strategies for the complex now that it will no longer be used as a school. Repair costs are estimated to be at least $20 million, but with the right resources and investment, supporters hope to preserve Roosevelt High School’s legacy and with it, contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the City of Gary. IS YOUR COMMUNITY DIVIDED? L.O.V.E. Is The Answer offers a seven day intensive charrette program that is designed to help groups with wildly differing opinions to solve problems and design solutions based on collective input. There are seven sessions, one per day, four hours per day, from 5 PM to 9 PM, beginning with dinner each night (relationship breakthroughs happen faster when people break bread together). The word charrette (https://lnkd.in/e835sWjv) is French for a cart or chariot. According to Wikipedia, “Its use in the sense of design and planning arose in the 19th century at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where it was not unusual at the end of a term for teams of student architects to work right up until a deadline, when a charrette would be wheeled among them to collect up their scale models and other work for review.” L.O.V.E. Is The Answer Charrettes combine elements of our Lead & Serve With L.O.V.E. class with the solution planning process popularized in the 2019 film “The Best of Enemies” starring Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell (https://lnkd.in/eYf7HWZu). The Best of Enemies is "The true story of the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater, an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, a local Ku Klux Klan leader, during the racially charged summer of 1971". The two co-chaired a community summit on school desegregation in Durham, North Carolina, which led to debate and surprising revelations that changed their lives forever. Potential clients include communities that have experienced significant breakdown of police community relations, labor disputes, companies that are experiencing severe internal or external issues, and other groups that are at odds with each other.
