Decisional Regret After Spine Surgery Two recent studies show that 1 in 5 patients undergoing complex spine surgery regret their decision to undergo surgery. This is an ultimate indication of a surgery that failed the patient. I frequently say that 50% of spine surgeries being done in this country are unnecessary, but this evidence suggests that 20% of patients are left worse off than they were before surgery. Sadly, these patients are also more likely to have significant depression, anxiety, and opioid dependence after surgery. Just glue it! Imagine a simple innovation like a settable bone putty that can not only stop bleeding on the sternum during heart surgery but also fuse the broken breastbone within hours after closure, resulting in less post-op pain, better physical recovery, improved quality of life and faster discharge from the hospital. I pioneered the concept of adhesive-enhanced sternal closure over ten years ago. It took many years of translational research in collaboration with a visionary company to achieve an optimal device for use. We now have a 2-minute addition to wire cerclage that I predict will quickly become a standard of care for heart surgery around the world. #innovation #translationalmedicine #cardiacsurgery #ERAS
