Optimizing Minds, Maximizing Success: Recruitment Guru, Psychiatry Advocate, & Mental Health Consultant
Mental Health America released the 2024 edition of “The State of Mental Health In America” and it continues to prove we need to do more. Youth ages 12-17 face significant barriers to accessing mental health treatment, including concerns about cost and lack of access to affordable care. This chart highlights additional reasons why they might avoid seeking help: a staggering 86.9% think they should handle their issues alone, while fears of judgment (59.8%) and privacy concerns (57.8%) also play significant roles. Given the increased risk of suicidality among this age group, it’s imperative to break down these barriers and encourage open conversations about mental health. We must ensure that young people know it’s okay to seek help, that they’re not alone, and their information is protected. A few ideas on what we can do to help: 1. Promote Open Dialogue: Encourage conversations about mental health at home, in schools, and in communities. 2. Educate and Raise Awareness: Share information about mental health resources and the importance of seeking treatment. 3. Reduce Stigma: Challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about mental illness and treatment. 4. Provide Access to Resources: Advocate for affordable and confidential mental health treatment options for all youth. #YouthMentalHealth #EndStigma #SuicidePrevention #BehavioralHealth #Teens #MentalHealth #Suicide #SupportOurYouth #MentalHealthTreatment

Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is also recognized as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Mental Health Awareness Month. Established in May 2008 as Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Mental Health Month, this observance aims to raise awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by underrepresented groups. It sheds light on the emotional well-being of all racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, highlighting disparities in accessing proper mental health care. 🌍 Throughout this month, we will focus on how these issues impact our minority communities and their mental health. Our efforts will emphasize resources specifically tailored to support mental health among people of color. 🌟 At FMG, we advocate for equitable access to compassionate and culturally competent mental health care for everyone. Let's join together to uplift and support the mental health of minoritized communities, break the stigma, and ensure that everyone can access the care and support they deserve. 🤝 #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #BIPOCMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMatters #BreakTheStigma #EquityInHealthcare #DiversityInHealthcare

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month highlights the unique mental health challenges faced by racial and ethnic minorities. This observance aims to address significant disparities in mental health care, such as lack of access to quality care, cultural stigma, language barriers, and a shortage of culturally competent health professionals. These obstacles often result in minorities being less likely to receive diagnosis and treatment for mental illnesses, leading to higher rates of disability and a lower quality of life. Let's work towards providing better, culturally competent care, breaking down stigma, and ensuring everyone has access to the mental health resources they need to create a future where mental health is a priority for all. #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMatters #HealthEquity #MinorityMentalHealth #BreakTheStigma #BIPOCMentalHealth #MinorityMentalHealthMonth #BrowardHousingSolutions

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. #DidYouKnow - Only 5% of therapists in the United States are black, according to the APA, making finding culturally competent care a challenge for many. - About 1 in 3 asylum-seekers and refugees experience high rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). - Racial/ethnic minority youth with behavioral health issues are more readily referred to the juvenile justice system than to specialty primary care. - Only one out of three African Americans who need mental health care receive it. #MinortyMentalHealthMonth may be coming to an end, but we want to highlight the importance of minority mental health all year long. Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet minority communities in America often face significant challenges in accessing mental health care. As the American Psychological Association notes, "racial and ethnic minorities bear a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental health disorders." This is exacerbated by systemic barriers such as discrimination, cultural stigma, and socioeconomic factors. Moreover, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) highlights that "minority communities are less likely to receive diagnosis and treatment for their mental illness, have less access to mental health services, and often receive a poorer quality of care." Addressing these disparities is not just a matter of health, but of social justice. By fostering an inclusive environment and promoting culturally competent care, we can help ensure that everyone has the support they need to thrive. Remember, mental health is health, and every community deserves equal access to quality care. #MentalHealthMatters #MinorityMentalHealth #HealthEquity #EndTheStigma #InclusiveHealthcare ---

Shocking statistics reveal over a quarter of a million children await mental health support in England, with nearly one million referred to services in 2022-23. Only 32% received support, while 39% had referrals closed. Waiting times vary drastically, with some waiting over two years. Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza emphasizes the urgency for timely support, attributing issues to neglect of mental health priorities. Despite increased funding, demand surpasses availability. She calls for a 10-year plan, reduced waiting times, and reforms to provide comprehensive mental health care. 📣Public Consultation📣 The Mental Health Commission is currently developing guidance for staff working in mental health services on the care and treatment of LGBTQIA+ service users. The purpose of this survey is to help the MHC to identify key areas that the new guidance for staff should address. As part of this consultation, we would like to hear from all relevant stakeholders. We especially want to hear from LGBTQIA+ people who have direct experience of using mental health services in Ireland, those close to them, and staff who have provided mental health care to LGBTQIA+ people. We will carefully assess all survey responses received and use the information gathered, along with other available evidence, to develop the guidance document.
