Last week, I met with someone who wants to 5X his company in the next 10 years. I asked him the question below. He needed no time to think about his answer. "We don't really have an employee/leadership development budget." A few months ago, we had a Vistage Worldwide, Inc. speaker tell us that the number one "want" of an employee(100,000 employees surveyed) from their employer was: developmental opportunities(higher salary was #5). What is your company's development budget? How will these employees become better? What is your employee retention strategy? If you back out compensation, why would a great employee want to work at your company or stay at your company? There is nothing more important to us than developing future leaders and value creators who make a difference to the lives of the young people in our care. We have jettisoned appraisal at Dixons. Instead, we want all members of staff to have conversations about performance as an organic part of their work: focusing on fuelling performance in the future rather than evaluating the past (for example, problem solving, goal setting and coaching for improved performance rather than emphasis on formal self-review, written reflections of the past, lengthy descriptions of performance or cumbersome record keeping). At Dixons, there is a culture of feedback that is impact rather than output driven with a maximum emphasis on staff motivation and self-reflection. Staff are intrinsically motivated to always get better because of their commitment to our mission. Feedback is regular with an emphasis on clarity; all staff receive personalised coaching at least every four weeks. For those that work in Human Resources in 2024, it’s a very different focus than during my time in the field (1986-2022). However, I truly believe the most important aspect of the job continues to be clearing the road for employees to be the best that they can be. That means driving company decisions that benefit the employees, so the “best” want to stay and lead towards the future. Leadership that doesn’t smother employees creativity and supports employees growing in the direction they want to take their career.

It was wonderful to speak with Jennifer Kaplan, head of campus and diversity recruiting and co-head of DEI at Schonfeld Strategic Advisors on how she entered the DEI field, what characteristics a successful DEI leader has, her advice to new DEI leaders and more. Another great presentation by B. Lynn Ware of Integral Talent Systems, Inc. today! Lynn's webinar, "Beyond Tradition: What's New in Leadership Succession Strategies" was hosted by Merit HR (Merit Resource Group). It was nice to see some Bay Area HR professionals I have met over the years, including Lisa Hickey, SPHR, Jenny Vonderwerth, Maureen Middleton, SPHR, SHRM-SCP (she/her), as well as hosts Danika Davis and Naomi Fisher. Our current landscape and workforce require looking at succession in a new way. Lynn shared various strategies to give businesses a competitive advantage. Here are three takeaways that align with employee engagement and increasing inclusion: 1. Move away from 1:1 grooming and focus on the skills-based development of your whole workforce. 2. Don't limit opportunities to the traditional vertical ladder. 3.
