The election is also being seen as a referendum on China. The Solomon Islands, under their Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, have been growing close to China over the last 5 years. Sogavare even signed a secret "security pact" with Beijing in 2022. The details haven't been revealed to the public. And some in the Solomon Islands are worried about China's growing influence. --- Solomon Islands | Security Pact | China | Elections | Firstpost | World News | News Live | Vantage | Palki Sharma | News #solomonislands #securitypact #china #elections #firstpost #vantageonfirstpost #palkisharma #worldnews

Last month's European Union Parliamentary elections were conducted fairly and peacefully, but they were not wholly immune from a wave of election-related disinformation. GDI observed narratives that aimed to undermine democratic processes, spread hostile conspiracy theories about key institutions and individuals, and benefit foreign actors like Russia by weakening support for the bloc. These narratives continue to pose a threat to democracy even after the polls have closed. In order to safeguard future elections, policymakers should take note of lessons learned in the aftermath of this latest round. GDI's new report details the kinds of disinformation narratives and tactics most successful in these elections, as well as an analysis of current and proposed policy measures to fight election disinformation. #VantageOnFirstpost Anti-EU Party Wins North Macedonia's Election | Vantage with Palki Sharma The country of North Macedonia in the Balkans has dealt another blow to European unity. The country went to polls on Wednesday and the results came in today. The people of North Macedonia have brought a euro-skeptic party into power. The VMRO-DPNE party has swept the elections. The have won both the presidency and the parliamentary elections. This could be a massive blow to North Macedonia's European Union ambitions. The country has been trying to join the EU for decades, but the new party in power may reverse their chances. The VMRO-DPNE party is likely to revive disputes with North Macedonia's EU neighbours, Greece and Bulgaria. Does this mean more divisions will keep appearing in Europe? --- North Macedonia | Macedonia | Elections | President | Firstpost | World News | Vantage | Palki Sharma #northmacedonia #macedonia #elections #president #firstpost #vantageonfirstpost #palkisharma #worldnew

The 2024 European elections were characterised by a high voter turnout and intense political debates. Although in some countries, such as Germany and France, the extreme right had a strong result, overall, their gains were less than predicted and it would be an exaggeration to talk of a ‘right-wing surge’. In other words, this was not a good evening for Putin and Xi, because despite their best efforts, the political centre (EPP, S&D, and Renew) has held and will continue to build a pro-European majority. A clear signal to the world: the EU remains a stable and unified force. Read our full #analysis of the elections here: https://lnkd.in/d3P5CyEb #europeanelections

The Golden Rule for elections is that governments lose elections. Oppositions only win when the voters don’t like what has happened and want a change.
