Continuing the celebration of our 10th Anniversary, this #ThrowbackThursday features an Issue Brief we published in partnership with members of our Equity Coalition titled “The Impact of LEA Status on Special Education in Charter Schools.” This brief discusses how a charter school’s legal status as part of a larger LEA or as its own independent LEA affects the autonomy, funding, and programming of the school. It's the 3rd week of school in Tennessee and while families are settling in to the school year, it's important to note that building an effective home-shool partnership is important for your child's success. Children do their best when they have the skills, support, and motivation to do so. By collaborating with your child’s school, you increase opportunities for your child to get the support they need. Well said Jim Davnie and Kent Pekel. With a focus on solutions, Family Engagement, Positive School Climate/Multi-tiered Systems of support, Data-Driven Early Warning Systems, Increased Caring Adults and Mentors, we are addressing the root causes instead of solely placing the blame on the student and/or their families.
According to the MN Student Survey data, 25% of 11th grade students, 28% of 9th grade students, 32% of 8th grade students, and 54% of 5th grade students in MN say "adults in my community care quite a bit/very much about me". Flip the language and say out loud the % of students who feel adults don't care about them.
This is why our community efforts to listen to and come alongside our young people is so important. Our young folks need multiple layers of support and this isn't only the school's responsibility.
We continue our efforts to open a youth center in our small rural community for this very reason; our youth have told us what they need!

Would you believe that some states are blocking access to funds to feed hungry children?
Every week in my clinic I take care of families that are struggling to put enough food on the table. A new federal program is looking to help with that. Check out our newest episode of KIDS TODAY where we talk all about the program, what states are rolling it out, and about how you (or someone you know) can get enrolled!

We believe in the power of community and the importance of ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. By supporting school lunch programs and engaging with our local schools, we can make a significant impact on the lives of Utah's kids.
Why This Matters:
Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies: Proper nutrition is crucial for a child's cognitive development and academic success. By eliminating school lunch debt and ensuring all students have access to healthy meals, we help create an environment where kids can focus on learning and growing.
Equal Opportunities: Every child deserves a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background or financial situation. Supporting universal school lunch programs ensures that no student is left behind or stigmatized due to unpaid lunch balances.
Community Strength: When we come together to support our schools, we build a stronger, more connected community. Volunteer programs, mentorship, and after-school activities provide a supportive network that helps kids develop confidence and life skills.
Future Champions: By fostering healthy habits and providing opportunities for physical activity through recreational programs we inspire the next generation of athletes and leaders. Investing in our children today sets the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.
Join us in making a difference. Together, we can ensure that every child in Utah has the nourishment and support they need to reach their full potential.
