Think outside the box. Thankfully, employers are waking up to the fact that resumes aren't just dull. They're a terrible way to get to know someone. More and more hiring screenings are becoming story-driven and interesting: asking for short YouTube videos to tell us what you do and why you'd be a good fit or asking for portfolios and projects you've made. But why not share it with a company anyway? You don't have to wait for them to ask for it. Tell your story through a YouTube video, website, or blog demonstrating your passion for the area. I’ve heard of one man who even created a website for companies to apply to be his employer! Talk about a new angle! I’ve also recently witnessed an out-of-the-box experience with a candidate applying at our company, Mission Box Solutions. Her application had a PowerPoint presentation attached to the email. It had interesting facts about her, like what kind of coffee she likes, a picture of her swearing into the military at 17 years old, and pictures of her, her spouse, and their pets. Then at the end, she mentioned the volunteer work she does. I would have never learned so much about her. And you’d better believe I was excited to hire her on ingenuity alone. We had discussions on #resumes, federal hiring and how our marketable skills lead to opportunities. 🌲December 8 we coordinated a wonderful career networking event in #wisconsin with 15 employers, and 28 attendees. 🎉🎉Check our feed for pictures! 🌲We also helped several people with #resumes, #interviewprep, #jobsearchstrategies, #salarynegotiation and #thankyounotes! 🎉🎉Congratulations to all the #candidates who started new positions this year, those who will start in January, and those who are still in the #hiringprocess!! By my count, since we first began we have assisted 11! Of those; 4 started jobs this year, 2 start in January, 1 has a job offer, 3 we helped with #salarynegotiation Overall it’s been an amazing ride!!

This job is “on hold.” We’ve decided to go in a “different direction,” This position “fell through.” We are “rescinding your offer.” Is it just me or does it feel like the Keystone Cops are in charge of hiring these days? (Kids, you can Google Keystone Cops). A job is a job. Employers should have a clear vision for what they want, who they need and how soon they are filling the gig. Wasting months of peoples time in interviews and then hiring NO ONE is a rookie move. Amateur hour. Regularly engage with recruiters and leaders from the companies you want to work for (comment, like, share, etc.). They may not have an open job right now... But interacting with decision makers at those companies may get you on their radar early on. Who are your top companies? - Maybe a friend worked for a small company, and loved it. - Maybe flexibility is a very apparent part of a company's culture. - Maybe the company mission is engaging, and speaks to your career goals. There are so many local companies to grow with. Whatever your goal, start engaging now.
