Lawrence H. Summers on what's wrong with America and why we can fix it: "Many of you have probably been to Harvard Square." "There's a bridge. The bridge goes over the Charles River. It's 362 feet long." "It had been around for a hundred years. It needed to be fixed." "(It took) five years and two months with one lane of traffic closed in order to renovate a 362 foot bridge." "To put that in perspective, Patton built a bridge over the Rhine -- 3,000 feet -- in one day!" "Julius Caesar built his bridge over the Rhine -- 3000 feet, not 300 feet -- in nine days!" "And this is what it took us." "So do we have huge problems? Yes." "Is this the first time we've had huge problems? Hell no." "Do I think we, all things considered, have a more solvable set of problems and a more dynamic society for solving them? Yeah, I do... than the other places." "And never forget this: we are the place that people from every part of the world want to come to." This was taped at last year's All-In Summit. This year, you can learn directly from the world's greatest minds at AIS 2024. Limited spots available. When: 9/8-9/10 Where: Los Angeles Apply: https://lnkd.in/eKzt_Gaf

Senior Researcher, Semantics & Reasoning - "The things we notice only become what they are because of the relationships." (Iain McGilchrist)
This is very surely worth attending! - "The theme of this conference is that the ever-proliferating crises we are experiencing can be seen to stem ultimately from a breakdown in our understanding of what it is to be a human being, and to lead a fulfilling life; what the world is like, and how we are in the process of destroying all that it has of value to give us; and what we would need urgently to do in order to alter the course on which we appear, despite ourselves, to be set. Central to this enquiry are the concepts of purpose and values. These are not invented by us, but have roots beyond ourselves: they are literally dis-covered (or not) by us. A common theme of the speakers will be how to re-engage with the values that alone bring meaning to life; and above all to resist the onslaught on truth and trust without which a society cannot stand." Dr Iain McGilchrist is one of the greatest thinkers of our time, I believe.

Creative Director at The Cultural Assembly and founder of Future Creatives. Immersive experience designer.
We shouldn't rely on politicians to save the arts. Look at history, has any party served the arts and made it better? I don't mean better in comparison to atrocious. What party has enabled the sector to be sustainable? Wings of the same bird. Not sure why the sector still believes government is coming to save it. In the meantime let's say this one enthusiastic politician is unable to do the things he says he will do, even though he's doesn't really say he'll do anything, how long do we wait until we realise nothing has changed, do we raise our voices again and say support the arts, art matters, etc etc. Each generation that comes to the arts has hope that a political party will save the arts, shouldn't we hold ourselves accountable to save it? It's the industry we love afterall. if you're an artist, audience member or venue it's on you, it's on all of us to save ourselves. if you don't know how, put your creative genius to work and see the clues that success has left, there are answers out there if you choose to see them. Please, please, please step into your power and stop handing it over and expecting a result. https://lnkd.in/dh3cEKCA
