Did you know? OSHA reports that nearly two million workers suffer musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) every year, with approximately 600,000 losing time from work for an average of seven days. Improper lifting can result in work-related MSDs – especially back injuries, which can have significant impacts on both employees and employers. In our latest ergonomics blog, Rupert Edwards, Fit For Work Ergonomics Specialist and Testing Technician, discusses proper vs. improper lifting, the impact on the spine, and steps for doing it the correct way. Handling heavy objects ranks among the primary causes of workplace injuries. According to reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 36 percent of work-related injuries resulting in missed workdays stemmed from shoulder and back injuries. Overexertion and cumulative trauma emerged as the predominant contributors to these incidents. Bending, along with twisting and turning, were frequently identified as movements leading to back injuries. Strains and sprains often result from improper lifting techniques or carrying loads that exceed safe limits. As a general rule, bend at the knees, not the hips. Plan your lift, and ask for help when needed. Do not lift or carry things you don’t feel comfortable with, no matter how light the load. Use mechanical means (e.g. hand trucks, pushcarts, etc.) when possible for heavier or awkward loads. Don't ignore pain or injuries that occur at the workplace! Document the occurrence with your employer, and visit a medical professional! Each state has unique laws, and not all workers will qualify for Workers’ Compensation.
