The true success of hosting major sporting events extends far beyond immediate economic results. Strategic benefits, such as enhancing national brand equity, boosting tourism, and reinforcing soft power on the global stage, often become lasting legacies. Consider Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With an investment ranging between $220 billion and $300 billion in infrastructure and preparations, Qatar's commitment was not just about creating world-class sports facilities but also about positioning itself as a modern, innovative nation. The country leveraged the World Cup to showcase its culture and improve its geopolitical standing in line with its Qatar National Vision 2030. Notably, just two months after the event, Qatar experienced a 406% surge in international visitors compared to the previous year, reflecting the enduring appeal of a well-executed global event. Similarly, China invested over $40 billion in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including infrastructure improvements. The iconic ‘Bird’s Nest’ stadium, designed under the artistic direction of Ai Weiwei, became a lasting symbol of modern China and its aspirations on the world stage. However, it's important to recognize the substantial financial commitment required to host such events. Not many cities can afford such an investment, which often means that those that do already possess a certain level of brand prestige. Additionally, unsuccessful games can leave behind legacies of seldom- or never-used structures that occupy valuable land and are expensive to maintain. For example, in Sydney, Australia, it now costs $30 million a year just to operate the 90,000-seat Olympic stadium. So, is hosting worth it? The answer is complex and varies by situation. While the benefits in national branding, tourism, and soft power can be substantial, they often come at a high cost that requires careful planning to ensure lasting value. 🕹️ I've made it through 2023, and what a journey it's been! No time for long-winded recaps, just a quick run-through of the checklist I set for myself back in 2022 - launching a business in Dubai, relocating a large part of the team, and immersing ourselves in Arabic culture. 1. Last year, we've opened 5 clubs in premium locations in Dubai, including Blue Waters, Dubai Mall Small, and Damac Hills 2. And let me tell you, we're just getting started! 🚀 2. We closed the deal of the year in December, but I’ll tell you more about it later. 3. Not to forget our robodogs, we've given them an upgrade to better suit club conditions. You'll get to meet them in our clubs real soon! Plus, we've started hosting cyber tournaments and fun events with popular streamers and gamers. And yes, Theatre of Digital Art was there too — it was a brilliant collab that our audience loved. 4. On a personal note, I've got a gold card for flights, so here's to more comfortable business trips! ✈️ Peeking into my 2024 checklist: We're not slowing down, folks! We'll soon open new clubs in Dubai Mall Big, International Media City, and JBR. And yes, we're eyeing expansion in other emirates too.
