Rapists are unlike any other offenders. During my time in prison, I met individuals who committed murder or robbery, acts often driven by rage or accidents. But rape and similar offenses stem from a fundamentally twisted mindset. It's hard to reconcile such actions with the character of someone like Trump, known for his business successes and TV presence. Suddenly labeling him as such seems out of place. Those who commit these heinous acts are often societal menaces, recognizable by their behaviors. It's crucial to differentiate between different types of offenses and understand the underlying issues. Donald Trump will survive this assassination attack as he is a high risk taker with tough poise tenacious and self determined. There would be an array of psychological consequences of this attack including PTSD and the impact of witnessing this assassination attempt on his followers and supporters exposed to the shooting. This is stark reminder of how high profile and all other politicians have become vulnerable on their day to day business representing their constituents. We think of the untimely loss and vulnerability of our MP's Jo Cox and Sir David Amess who were murdered as they served their constituents. Generally speaking, the personality and mindset of those who attempt to take the life of a high profile individual, mostly world leaders or leading politicians, or business leaders can be extremely complex as are the underlying motives. We know from research activity in political psychology , that assassinations are usually politically motivated, although not in all cases. What then can this politically unexpected event mean for the US elections? Trump has issued a statement on "Truth Social". It is " God alone" that prevented "the unthinkable" from happening. The statement calls on Americans to "remain resilient" and show "our true character". But what exactly does he mean by that? He goes on to make attributions with regard to faith, the inference is that he recognizes the living power of God as having saved his life. So many questions to be asked and answered.
