That means hotels go through roughly 3.3 million bars of soap every day The Soap Recycling Revolution: Shawn Seipler’s Quest: Fourteen years ago, Shawn Seipler, a frequent business traveler, pondered the fate of unused hotel room soap. He discovered that most hotels simply threw it away, contributing to the staggering 440 billion pounds of solid waste generated annually by the hospitality industry. The Harbour Hotel is constantly making a conscious effort to increase its sustainability practices within our hotel. Below are just some of the initiatives the Harbour Hotel team have taken along our sustainable journey. ♻️ In 2020 we removed all single use toiletries from our bedrooms. ♻️ In 2021 we replaced plastic water bottles from our rooms and replaced with compostable paper bottles. ♻️ In 2024 we are targeting a 20% reduction of Gas consumption & 10% reduction in electricity on 2023. ♻️ We use Eco Towels in the hotel which helps reduce drying time water temperature each wash resulting in Gas reduction by 10% and Electricity by 24% year to date . ♻️ We track and report on our waste break down on a monthly basis (with Waste Management Solutions company) and compete on it with other hotels in the MHL Hotel group. ♻️We have reached our goal of achieving over 80% of our waste being diverted from the landfill, we are currently achieving 82%. We have also installed induction in the main kitchen reducing our Gas consumption by 39%. ♻️ We are partners with Re Pack, who recycle all our cardboard. ♻️ We use Biodegradable coasters and drinking straws, compostable napkins and take-away cups. ♻️ We work towards reducing paper waste: remove unnecessary paper items from the rooms, minimise printed material and we have QR codes on our tables to reduce the amount of menu paper needed.
