Really hard for some, practically impossible for some freelance designers. Let's talk money. There are some clients who want bums on seats and have a low value for investing in design. They kind of think anyone can do design (within reason) and honestly, it's really not surprising. There are so many freelance designers out there, with the same titles saying the same thing - basically everything about themselves "look at my new artwork". In fact it could be quite reasonable (from a client who hasn't worked with a freelancer before) to think that they are all the same. However, when you understand the real problems you solve and can express why you are the only person that can solve a specific problem for a well defined niche it's possible to earn more money. Of course you want your career to make you feel good, it's soul destroying working day in day out on something that you don't love. Many freelance surface pattern designers feel like they have a portfolio of work which is in good need of an update, so they go spend a tonne of cash on various courses. I know - I've been there. Here's the killer. The course that teaches you how to “Make Designs That Sell” is useless unless you know how to market that art to a solid, well thought out niche…and the irony is you have been creating hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of designs for brands that have sold all over the world.
