Building data pipelines has no inherent value. Many people forget that the reason we got into this trade is to help people in the business uncover ways to make their lives easier. Nobody really cares about the complicated logic you wrote to ingest data from a gnarled API. No-one cares about what dbt is. No one cares about the dashboards you’re building, unless they’re helping people make better deciison. The exception of course is when you work for a business where data pipelines are the very essence of what makes that product great. Something like a search engine, or a social media network. But probably not b2b SAAS or any traditional industries (yet). #dataengineering #dataorchestration Want to spend less time building data pipelines and more time on the good stuff? Check out Orchestra

Data ingestion can be a huge timesuck for your data team. Fortunately we have tools now like dltHub that simplifies the ingestion process for many popular sources and destinations. In my latest video I go over a simple dlt pipeline for Hubspot to BigQuery using Dagster. [link in comments]

#datamesh has been an inspiring but nebulous buzzword for a few years now despite at least one wonderful book on the topic... so I love Brent Brewington's succinct (accidental?) definition: A DATA MESH IS A TECHNICAL FRAMEWORK THAT ENABLES TEAMS TO FOLLOW ENGINEERING BEST PRACTICES AROUND DATA. Much of a CDO's work is to define those best practices and subtly (or not so subtly) get data teams and technology teams to build shared understanding by applying them. It's long, slow work on Bene Gesserit time scales... helping people transform the way they think about systems by building habits and practices that help them understand each other better (and stop getting in each other's way). That means a #datamesh is a #qualitymanagementsystem (#qms) that comes with: ✅ A framework that supports decentralized compliance with standards and best practices ☑ Data teams & tech teams that build shared understanding through those standards and best practices 🏆 Incentives and recognition for driving projects and initiatives using the framework Thanks for this great take, Brent! And for sharing your review of dbt Mesh 🙂

In the latest survey of analytics engineers around the world it emerges that 60% of people think increasing trust in the data team is important. This is because no-one knows what the analytics team do, but mainly because dbt is a mess. A piece of software that allows you to push down queries to Snowflake and ingest metadata into a lineage graph AFTER YOUR PIPELINES HAVE ALREADY RUN is not going to solve this. It's robust orchestration, end-to-end alerting *and* metadata which is what teams need. It's the full picture. Best part: with Orchestra you get this from day 1. Highly modular architecture, complete metadata and lineage, end-to-end alerting for technical and business stakeholders alike. Disagree? Didn't think so

📢 Launching dbt Docs on 5X dbt Core At 5X, we’ve always believed in the power of fostering a culture of collaboration and transparency around our data. When your team has a shared understanding of the data they’re working with, they can collaborate more effectively and make better, faster decisions. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce the launch of dbt Docs on our 5X dbt Core platform! 🤩 With the new dbt Docs, we can automatically generate comprehensive documentation for our data models after each job run. What this means: → Centralized Documentation: No more scattered docs! All your data model documentation lives in one easy-to-access place. → Improved Discoverability: Say goodbye to time-consuming searches. Users can now quickly find and navigate through your data assets. → Automated Lineage Diagrams: Visualize the relationships between your data models and sources with interactive lineage diagrams. → Self-Service: Empower your team! Users can explore the documentation independently, reducing reliance on constant support. I’m incredibly proud of the 5X team for bringing this vision to life. This is a major step towards our goal of making data accessible and actionable for everyone. Curious to see dbt Docs in action? Schedule a personalized demo today! Ping me if you want to talk data mesh for your organization. Been very impressed with the capability of dbt Mesh, which enables data teams to follow software engineering best practices This framework lets you build a data architecture that mirrors your organization’s structure, reducing tech debt, minimizing duplication, and making the whole system easier to change and iterate on What you can do with dbt Mesh on Cloud: - Domain-level ownership of code & data - Cross-project ref’s (reduces data silos) - Data contracts with data quality guarantees across shared interface - dbt Semantic Layer - how to define metrics as “DRY” (don’t repeat yourself) - define once & reuse wherever And you can leverage these dbt Core features: - Central governance through shared macros - data_tests to lock in assumptions & drive data quality - unit_tests for complex transformation logic Also, if you love tour local dev setup (VS Code user speaking here), dbt CLI lets you work inside that space while still operating in dbt Cloud I’ll stop there. Love this platform so much, and I’ve seen lightbulb moments with data teams as they adopt it for their transformation layer
