🌟Rwanda's Smart City Hub: Transforming Urban Living!🌟 We are proud to present the fifth DIHs that took part in the FIWARE4Africa project, which was born from the strategic alliance between Make-IT in Africa and the FIWARE Foundation and promoted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. In 2017, Rwanda unveiled its Smart City Masterplan, setting a vision for harnessing information and communication technologies (ICTs) to accelerate sustainable urban development. Building on this momentum, the Rwandan government launched the "Smart City Hub" in 2023, a pivotal project aimed at driving efficient, sustainable, data-driven solutions to enhance the quality of life in Rwandan cities and communities through technology and innovation. The Smart city HUB operates as a one-stop-shop, bringing together key players in the smart city ecosystem to co-design and implement solutions that address the needs of citizens. The Hub focuses on three main objectives: Creating a demand-driven Smart City agenda. Serving as a source of research, knowledge, and connections. Solving Smart City challenges by leveraging the right actors and resources efficiently. During the recent FIWARE4Africa business and training sessions, innovators from the Smart City Hub underscored the need for innovative solutions to tackle specific challenges in public transportation, such as congestion, inefficiency, and environmental impact. Our discussions highlighted how FIWARE could significantly enhance the efficiency of Rwanda's transport system, particularly in metropolitan areas like Kigali. The Smart City Hub is poised to support transportation authorities in optimizing routes, improving fleet management, and reducing congestion, leading to more reliable and effective public transportation services. “Adopting FIWARE technologies might promote innovation and entrepreneurship in Rwanda's technological environment. By giving developers and startups access to FIWARE's open-source platform and standardized APIs, the Innovation Hub may enable the creation of novel mobility solutions adapted to the local environment. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Franck Le Gall to the FIWARE Global Summit, where he will be sharing his knowledge and experience in the Smart Water session. Franck is the CEO of EGM, an innovative SME that focuses on integrating and validating emerging technologies. He has extensive experience in leading R&D projects, innovation management, and technical programs. Additionally, Franck is involved in various EU research projects, serves as the chairman of the ETSI ISC-CIM standardization committee, the chairman of the FIWARE Water Domain Committee, and is an elected member of the FIWARE technical steering committee. EGM deploys FIWARE/NGSI-LD platforms tailored for the water domain to its customers. In his presentation "Water Data Valorization," Franck will describe ongoing deployments to reduce water consumption and monitor water quality and usage. He will also focus on the ongoing developments to integrate the data space area, outlining how the NGSI-LD specifications enable tracking of data quality, how DCAT ensures uniform representation of data and service assets, and plans for data space connector integration.
