Last December 2023, the University Network for Innovation, Technology, and Engineering (Unite!) published a handbook to discuss the best practices on open science and innovation. A product of an in-depth comparative case study involving 70 research teams across seven European universities, it unveils practical guidelines for embracing open science and innovation practice to further develop a new governance model tailored for universities in the digital era. The handbook highlights open protocol sharing, or making the entire research design transparent and accessible. One of the people who was interviewed was our director, Dr. Hans Rocha IJzerman. He emphasized the crucial role of the Open Science Framework (OSF) platform in making open science work (and did you know that Dr. Hans Rocha IJzerman was the OSF’s 12th registered user?!?). At ABSL, we prioritize registered reports for confirmatory research, along with sharing analysis scripts and utilizing the OSF for the reproducibility of one’s work. Without such rigor, it is hard to trust the accuracy of scientific research. At ABSL, we don't just advocate for open science; we live it. Submitted my abstract for the SoTEL Symposium. Thanks for asking me to present Alastair Wells. Technology, and in particular the internet, has had an undeniable impact on all aspects of society. Professor Manuel Castells, conceptualises this change as the rise of a ‘Network Society’ with the internet being the decisive technology in this change - “with the explosion of wireless communication in the early twenty-first century, we can say that humankind is now almost entirely connected”. The network society is constructed around personal and organisational networks, powered by digital networks and communicated by the internet. This, in turn, means society is both boundaryless and global. If this is the emerging paradigm, then we need to reconsider how we ‘do’ education. Our current approach does not yet align with this. In fact, it only amplifies our vulnerabilities. Schools operating as silos, in a competitive, market-driven environment, focused entirely on the local context, makes little sense. It is no wonder that as schools compete to attract all the best teachers for their particular area, others suffer as a result. Teacher shortages are inevitable in such an environment. Networks of schools and networked learning are just one key to addressing many of the challenges we face in a fast-changing world. This is clear in the development of Kōhui Akos which recognises the importance of schools working together to provide meaningful pathways for learners within or across local communities. However, networked and flexible education needs to be deeply embedded at a system level to really achieve meaningful change. In such a paradigm shift, schools work together as networks of learning to create efficiencies in the use of their resourcing, to cater to a wide variety of learner needs and interests and to prepare them for a ‘connected’ world. We embed a system level solution. This solution has operated within New Zealand for close to thirty years with little central support. It is a grass roots development led by rural schools who had to work together to remain sustainable. Operating as regional clusters schools used the internet to share teachers and programmes across schools. We certainly recognise the challenges to this. Self-managing, autonomous schools is embedded into our educational pysche. It is how we expect things to work. However, networked education actually strengthens the local rather than dissipating it. It does not deny autonomy. It just asks schools to think at both a networked and local level. We have an opportunity to leverage technology to realise a vision for education in New Zealand which establishes schools as networks, as collaborators and as providers in a boundaryless environment. How can Project Based Learning and Design Thinking support the collaboration between a university course and a smart product company? This is the topic of the paper written with my colleague Gianluca Carella that I presented last week at INTED2024. Without even realizing it, we as people tend to belong to diverse networks, currently one of the most efficient and effective forms for making an impact and generating value. ⁉ DID YOU KNOW that 78% of all established networks fade away within 1 to 2 years’ time and 92% over 3 years’ time?   ⏰ Time is often underestimated as a factor and thus networks fall into a trap of either aiming at quick wins or not having the PATIENCE to wait to come to fruition. 🤔 Accept UNCERTAINTY as part of the network’s DNA. #MVideeNGO #THUAS #networking #impact #generatingvalue

Italian facilities: user access, services and long-term sustainability) project will launch a call for proposals for transnational access in May 2024.   The call will be addressed to foreign researchers and will fund access to Italian facilities that are part of ECCSEL ERIC and is open to applications from European industry, SMEs, Universities, and Research Institutes.   The aim of the ECCSELLENT project is to upgrade most of the Italian facilities of ECCSEL ERIC and to expand the Italian Node to promote the development and internationalisation of Italian research in the full chain of CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation, transport, and storage).   🔗Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dp8eHQWS

***UPDATE*** 21 Dec, I'm very happy to report that Santa has come early to these young inventors. I just want express my gratitude for the offers of help and support. Happy Christmas to all. Dear #IPExperts in my network as we are into the season of #goodwill, I have a request. I have been contacted by a team of 6th year students that developed what sounds like an interesting #environmentalsustainability technology that they will exhibit at the BT Young Scientist competition on January 11th.  And…yes you’ve guessed it…they haven’t patented it yet because they couldn’t afford to. So, they reached out for some help. I can’t help them with funds or with drafting and filing a patent. Also, I can’t say for sure that it is patentable, but here’s what I do know: ✅ The Problem they are attempting to solve is a very real #IrishBiodiversity challenge. ✅ They are 3 girls with a vision to take their idea further after school. ✅ They seem to have achieved very promising results with a plausible bio-chemistry solution developed over the past couple of years. ✅ They say their development work and results are well documented and undisclosed. ✅ They say that they will have to disclose their invention in full at the BTYS competition, i.e. no option to retain certain features/details. ✅ They understand the value of IP and, while a little late doing something about it, are aware that they should protect it now, they just don’t have the resources. ✅ The BTYS exhibition is not listed in the International exhibitions as referred to in Article 55 EPC. So to my request. If anyone would like to be #Santa to these young #womeninventors by helping them as sponsor or pro bono to get a patent application on file by Jan 10th, I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated. It's no small task but if you think you could give a helping hand, please DM me and I’ll put you in contact with them and their teacher. BTW I have no personal connection with them, they’ve just been searching around for support and found their way to me. In the X-Net's workshop "PREPARING THE ROADMAP: PRIORITISING CROSSDISCIPLINARY TRAINING NEEDS WITH INDUSTRY”, we analysed how to strengthen links and promote interdisciplinary industry-academia collaborations and how to increase porosity across sectors. Porosity allows for research to be a journey, travelling across the leading edge of disciplines and sectors, rather than “arriving” at a set destination (e.g., at a discovery or academic position). https://lnkd.in/eEYQ_gUd
