Fresh Tracks Fridays - Paving New Paths at Taylor: Containerization vs. Reserved Trucking
Cans or trucks for cost control?
I vote trucks. Here’s why.
Containerized loads (or "cans" for the sake of this article) are gaining popularity due to their weight limitations and flexibility across the relocation supply chain.
However, I believe reserved trucking is the better choice, at least for continental relocations.
First, cans add extra costs. You need to rent the container, arrange pickup or delivery (incurring extra fees), load it, transport it (more fees), then unload and return it (even more fees).
In contrast, when trucks are owned, these costs are eliminated entirely. Trucks generally remain the most economical option for transporting goods, although exceptions do exist.
Additionally, trucks paired with true self-haul offer complete control over the supply chain. With no risk of strikes, drivers can make trip adjustments seamlessly, keeping everything under full control.
Of course, true self-haul isn’t feasible for everyone, but Taylor is unique in this regard.
While weight control is an advantage of container loads, trucks provide this as well.
For example, a 20-foot container can fit into a DZ truck, and a 40-foot container fits easily into a tractor trailer.
The issue isn’t the limitations of trucking; it’s weight control.
If I were managing relocations between the U.S. and Canada, I’d set a weight limit similar to that of a container load, but without the added costs of container rentals, giving us better control over the move and helping us deliver quality service.
While trains can sometimes be faster or cheaper than trucks, making container loads a viable option, "Reserved Trucking" (or reserving space in a truck) remains the best choice for the majority of relocations.
It’s more affordable (since we own the assets), offers greater control, and provides more flexibility.
Hopefully, this gives some insight into additional ways corporations can manage costs with a different HHG model.
