American Forests—a member of the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance (EHRA)—protects forests and ensures they are resilient to the impacts of climate change. To do this, American Forests lead a range of initiatives focused on both protection and reforestation. One of these is the Tree Equity Score—a tool that measures how the benefits of urban tree canopies are distributed. On the platform, policymakers and citizens can find their neighborhood's score and make data-driven plans to expand canopies and better protect the communities exposed to the impacts of extreme heat and climate change. The swift implementation of NCS is critical to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis — and also support thriving ecosystems, biodiversity and communities. But to effectively implement these solutions worldwide, we need to truly understand what makes a natural climate solution. On #InternationalDayofForests, let's celebrate the global role Washington State's forests have in minimizing the effects of climate change. These beautiful, complex forests act as powerful carbon sinks by absorbing carbon and storing it in trees and soil for decades; and they must be protected for current and future generations. At the Department of Natural Resources, we need better forest management practices.
