Associate University Librarian, Publishing, University of Michigan Library and Director of University of Michigan Press
We've recently been interviewing some of the 3,278 readers who've contacted us to share what having free access to one of University of Michigan Press's books has meant to them. The stories have inspired me, intrigued me, and sometimes made me cry. You can learn more about our project to speak with real OA book readers here: https://lnkd.in/gSguxmnp. I know that almost 2,741,088 accesses from over 229 countries and territories is a big number, and we love sharing our Book Analytics Service public dashboard (https://lnkd.in/gFhGnYA2). It's also exciting to see the monthly growth, jumping to over 100,000 accesses in March. But it's that human connection that makes all the difference. If some of the voices resonate with you, I hope you'll support our work. Charles ---------------- Here are a few snippets. You can read more responses here: https://bit.ly/3ICn7MK "I am a first-generation student working part-time on top of a full course load. Having to spend tens to hundreds of dollars to access articles and scholarly books would make writing research papers next to impossible for me. Seeing that a source I need is open-access or otherwise available for free takes a great burden off my shoulders." "Please make more materials open-access. It would help world scholarship a lot. I am from the Philippines and much of our research would be better informed if we had access to more materials." "I am such a big fan of this being available to me without having to go through a login or paywall. It is 4am and I am crying Real Human Tears. My day has been made. Thank you." "Read FT, NY Times, Wash post regular basis. That's just today's news. Your collection should give understanding what is under today's headlines. The background matters." "I'm not an academic and it's purely for personal interest. Since I no longer have a connection to a university or university library and academic books tend to be ludicrously expensive and beyond my budget for just a hobby read, the fact that it's free online is the only reason I would have access to this information, so thanks for making an accessible option." "I'd like to thank the University of Michigan Press web-site for such help for my job! Such a beautiful and useful book for scholars is available for free - it's really important nowadays. University people and scholars from the whole world need to have an open-access and easy-sharing of their materials with each other. So, once again, thank you all for such an opportunity!" "As a person with visual impairment, I found the book contents accessible with my screen reading software." "Have open-access books is pivotal for our student population, many of whom come from low-resource communities and often find textbooks cost-prohibitive to completing courses and academic credits successfully. "
Today's the day! Help us reach our goal of making 75% of our books #OpenAccess this year. Every donation brings us closer to delivering important scholarship to communities worldwide, free to anyone with an internet connection. Learn more and donate here: https://lnkd.in/gxn_Mfn7

Inclusivity. It's a non-negotiable when upholding ethical planning standards (that goes for any people-oriented activity, really). A community should have full representation when it comes to decision-making, and that includes all kinds of bodies, cultures, and gender. There's a documented spectrum of engagement practices in local government (the IAP2 spectrum, for example). In a profession that is trending more diverse and inclusive, prevailing wisdom suggests the more we collaborate and defer to empowering the full breadth of people, the more beloved our community designs and programs become. For bike transportation, we observe men are far overrepresented in *who* takes the risk of pedaling alongside car traffic (picture the typical bike lane). Men on solo trips, commute trips, on man-vs-elements trips. Women who make up at least half of our population and make many essential trips that benefit our society often report barriers that men may not. To tilt the scales back in favor of women who are interested/determined to travel on a bike, it's important to collaborate with, and sometimes defer to, women like Allison. I'm so excited to hear about Allison's lessons in developing her ever-deeper knowledge of bikeway design and experiences of her own as a person navigating our landscape by bike. 🚲
This year I had the incredible honor of being featured by Piece of the Pi, a charity supporting women in STEM founded by my incredible friend Ainsley Ramsey. Today is the final day of her fundraiser when she will be reciting over 1k digits of pi from memory. If you haven't yet, please consider donating to her cause! https://lnkd.in/e86wDB5n

Please consider donating to the Page Education Foundation or learning about us. A little background: The Page Education Foundation's goal is to encourage, motivate, and assist Minnesota's students of color in the pursuit of post-secondary education, and, in the process, change the future. What's unique about the Page Education Foundation: Page Scholars, return to their communities (all over the state of MN) to serve as mentors and role models for elementary and high school students. They also have opportunities to be mentored themselves. Our ROI is over 500%: For every $1 spent on Page Scholars, there is a projected $5.52 in social value created through increased earnings and improved health for Page Scholars and children served, increased classroom support, and reduced onboarding cost and increased productivity for our Accelerate corporate partners. (From an Ecotone Analytics GBC study.) Why now: Minnesota's educational disparities across race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status continue and not just in the Twin Cities metro are, but across the state. (From a Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis study.) Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. And thanks for reading to this point. If you'd like to donate, the link to do so is in the post below.

I have been working at Marrickville Legal Centre for 9 years and have never witnessed the type of demand for our services that we are experiencing now. Conditions are hard out there and they're becoming increasingly harder for those that are already struggling. We have an amazing group of staff and volunteers who go above and beyond to try to meet this need but sadly, like many community legal centres, we do not have the resources to help everyone. This isn't fair. People should be able to engage effectively with our justice system irrespective of their level of income. This is why we launched the Low Bono Legal Service (LBLS) in 2020. The LBLS service model offers affordable fixed-fee representation for those who cannot afford private lawyers but are ineligible to access free legal support. Since its inception, the LBLS has assisted 364 clients, recovering $3.4 million in entitlements. The fees generated through this service have enabled MLC to employ an additional lawyer, which means we can help more people. We are also working closely with Women's Legal Service QLD, the EDO and Microsoft Gold Partner, Barhead Solutions, to develop a new legal practice management system called Consensus for Purpose. Built on Microsoft’s Dynamics 365, Consensus for Purpose will streamline the entire client journey and reduce the administrative burden through automation and AI. This will free up our limited resources to focus on legal work and speed up the process for those needing help. These projects capture the innovative culture at MLC that is forever exploring new ways to help more people. We will never receive enough funds from government or donations to meet demand, which is why we need to be more creative in how to do more with less. This year we’re asking for donations to help advance these projects. Every dollar donated to MLC goes further, ensuring that more individuals receive the legal support they desperately need. Your tax-deductible donation will not only make a difference in the lives of those MLC serves but also helps drive the innovation needed to bridge the justice gap in Australia. We’ve had a very generous offer to match every donation up to the value of $10,000. All donations received through to 30 June will be matched dollar-for-dollar, so your impact will be doubled! Please consider donating to Marrickville Legal Centre today by heading to mlc.org.au/donate
Donate to MLC before 30 June and double your impact! All donations received throughout this week will be matched up to the value of $10,000, thanks to one generous anonymous donor. Your donation is tax-deductible and every cent will go directly towards providing legal assistance to the community. Donate at the link in our bio: www.mlc.org.au/donate #Doubleyourimpact #JusticeForUsAll #fromtheinnerwestservingnsw #MarrickvilleLegalCentre #endoffinancialyear
