Happy Payroll Giving Month!🥳 Did you know one of the ways you can support us is through payroll giving? It's super easy and is a great way to support our work. We're not the most well known mental health charity, so every penny counts towards our life saving work. We'd love it if you might consider us💗 Here's how to set it up: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/efPb4f5H And here are some helpful questions answered 1️⃣ What is Payroll Giving? Payroll Giving (sometimes known as Give as You Earn) is an easy and tax-efficient way of making regular donations to your favourite charities straight from your gross pay. 2️⃣ Why is Payroll Giving a good thing? Payroll Giving is a great way to enable the charities you care about to receive regular funds. It allows them to make plans and focus on their charitable objectives. 3️⃣ How can I do this? Payroll Giving is super easy to setup. Just click this link: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/efPb4f5H 4️⃣ How much does it cost? There are no set-up costs for employers. Payroll Giving Agencies can charge a processing fee of up to 5% of the donation amount. However, some agencies don’t charge and some charge a transaction fee per employee. You may choose to cover this fee for your employees otherwise the Agency will deduct it from donations. 5️⃣ What is a Payroll Giving Agency? Payroll Giving Agencies facilitate the secure transition of funds from your gross wages to your nominated charity’s bank account. Payroll Giving Agencies are themselves charities and they are authorised by HMRC to perform this function. Your company needs to have a contract with a Payroll Giving Agency to allow donations to be deducted from your gross pay. 💜💗💚💛

There is a new report out from CAF about payroll giving. 19 years ago I wrote a briefing paper on payroll giving trends when I was at CAF - I have blown the cobwebs off my hard copy and have revisited the findings! In 2005 we were trying to understand the impact of several initiatives which sought to improve payroll giving use, and found them to have increased giving levels. It was a time of great interest in tax-effective giving and there were high hopes that payroll giving would take off as a mainstream way to give. When payroll giving was introduced in 1987/88, £1m was donated (that's £3.7m in today's money), which rose to £168m in 2004/05 (adjusted for inflation) and the new CAF report reveals that their own GAYE scheme reached £151.5m in 2022 (adjusted), down from the previous year. This is a dizzying growth from 1987 to 2022 of 3,995%! This is great news of course, but the proportion of people on PAYE using payroll giving hasn't increased since my 2005 report, it's still at just 2%. The volumes being donated are also small in comparison with other popular methods like direct debit. I can't help wondering whether it is time for a new promotional government tax break, or whether after 37 years it is time to wind-up this payroll giving experiment? #payrollgiving #taxeffective #2005

Remember that if you're AFSCME 328 and changed jobs at OHSU, you agreed to KEEP paying dues EVEN IF YOU LEFT your job or moved to a non-union role. According to the fine print, the ONLY way to stop the payroll deductions is to notify them in writing during a once-a-year annual window. It's all on you to remember to do this. Image details: A screengrab of the fine print on the current online membership application for AFSCME enrollees applying to join the union, with certain portions highlighted. It reads, "I hereby apply for membership in Local 328 Oregon AFSCME Council 75 and I agree to abide by its Constitution and Bylaws. By this application, I authorize Oregon AFSCME Council 75 and its successor or assign to act as my exclusive bargaining representative for purposes of collective bargaining with respect to wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment with my Employer. Effective immediately, I hereby voluntarily authorize and direct my Employer to deduct from my pay each pay period, regardless of whether I am or remain a member of the Union [this part is highlighted in yellow: "regardless of whether I am or remain a member of the Union"], the amount of dues certified by Oregon AFSCME Council 75, and as they may be adjusted periodically by the Union. I further authorize my Employer to remit such amount monthly to Oregon AFSCME Council 75. This voluntary authorization and assignment is revocable by providing the Union and my Employer written notice of revocation not less than ten (10) days and not more than twenty (20) days before the yearly anniversary of the signing of this membership card [this part is highlighted in orange: "revocable by providing the Union and my Employer written notice of revocation not less than ten (10) days and not more than twenty (20) days"], unless an applicable collective bargaining agreement imposes other limitations. The applicable collective bargaining agreement (if there is one) is available for review upon request. This card supersedes any prior check-off authorization card I signed. I recognize that my authorization of dues deductions, and the continuation of such authorization from one year to the next, is voluntary and not a condition of my employment. Payments to the Union are not deductible as charitable donations for federal income tax purposes. However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses."

Avoiding Penalties: Payroll Essentials for NPOs "Many nonprofit organisations (NPOs) in South Africa are Public Benefit Organisations (PBOs) and therefore exempted from paying taxes. This tax exemption, however, does not apply when it comes to employee taxes and unemployment insurance. All NPOs that employ staff must register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and comply with payroll tax obligations such as PAYE (Pay As You Earn), UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund), and other payroll-related taxes. While PBOs may be exempt from income tax on certain conditions, this exemption does not apply to payroll taxes. " Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dMAgGMiA . . .
