8-26-24 UPDATE: On Saturday(24th), the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ruled that trains must start rolling again first thing Monday(26th) morning. This decision by the CIRB imposes binding arbitration. First, we had a company induced work stoppage stopping all movement Thursday. Then the Canadian Government stepped in ordering a resumption of rail services while both sides entered forced arbitration. Then, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference filed a 72 hour intent to strike against CN notice... Now the CIRB has made its ruling... It appears that, the strike notice is now negated, and trains will begin moving again but it's anticipated that it will take weeks to ramp up service to full strength country wide. The union had vowed to appeal the ruling in court so as always...more to come. We, at Imperative Logistics preemptively took measures to mitigate delay to our customers and will continue to do so. Hopefully your provider did as well? Here are some updates and industry news that might provide some insight as we move into some uncharted waters...

Disruption Alert: Disruption from Canadian Rail Lockouts North American supply chains could face significant disruptions as Canada’s two major freight railroads - Canadian National (CN) and CPKC - halt operations due to unresolved contract disputes. This simultaneous shutdown is unprecedented and threatens to choke vital supply lines between the U.S. and Canada, with far-reaching effects on supply chains across multiple industries. After prolonged negotiations with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, CN and CPKC locked out over 10,000 workers, bringing all rail traffic in Canada to a standstill, including cross-border shipments with the U.S. The impact is expected to be severe, with potential supply shortages, clogged ports, and increased costs affecting businesses across various sectors. Railroads are a critical part of the economy, moving billions of dollars in goods each month. The sudden halt could force companies to scale back or even shut down operations if supply lines remain disrupted. While trucking offers a partial solution, it cannot match the capacity of rail, which moves far more goods at once. 💡 Call to Action: As this situation develops, it’s essential for business leaders to stay informed and ready to adapt. Understanding the potential ripple effects of these lockouts will be key to managing the challenges ahead. 🔗 Stay updated: Keep an eye on developments and adjust your strategies accordingly.
