For those who are not daily in this world and want to understand an important trend in two words, here’s a simplified explanation (there’s a 🍪 at the end). Think of the difference between Gmail and Microsoft Word. Gmail is SaaS - you don’t download a software, the software is just there in the cloud and you access it every time you log in. Microsoft you (used to) buy as a software, install it on your computer and then it was just there for you to use. Enterprise software used to be like Microsoft, but is moving to the Google model. As is Microsoft - if you’re using Windows 365 you moved from owning the software to essentially leasing access to it. There are perceived downsides to moving to SaaS (lack of control, perceived vulnerability), but a LOT of upside. Basically it frees you as an enterprise from having to manage, upgrade, protect and problem solve for users, and shifts all that burden to the software vendor. It means you get automatically upgraded to the latest version, get the latest fixes and patches and bug protection, which evolve in line with both the solution and cybersecurity threats, and you can focus on your core business, be that running an insurance company or a hospital or a vast cookie-making enterprise (if you read this far you deserve a 🍪).
