How does a #self-#powered #photodetector work? The core principle of a self-powered photodetector is the #photovoltaic effect, where light (photons) is absorbed by a semiconductor material, creating electron-hole pairs. These charge carriers are then separated by an internal electric field, generating a photocurrent. For charge carrier separation, the built-in potential must be generated in the device in different ways, including using p-n junction, active materials of Type-II heterojunction, or asymmetric contacts.
