𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 In the world of real estate photography, creating captivating images that highlight the best features of a property is an art form. It's about more than just point-and-shoot; it's about curating an experience for potential buyers. As an editor, I've had the privilege of working with talented photographers who understand the importance of composition, lighting, and angles. However, there's one common issue that often arises and can significantly impact the final result: 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. One of the most common issues real estate photographers face is clutter within the property. It's not uncommon for homeowners or occupants to overlook tidying up before a photoshoot. This oversight can range from everyday items like dishes in the sink and unmade beds to more significant issues like excessive furniture or personal belongings scattered throughout the space. From an editor's perspective, clutter presents several challenges: 𝟏. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Clutter distracts viewers from the property's key features, making it difficult for them to envision themselves living in the space. 𝟐. 𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬: Even the most beautifully composed shot can be marred by clutter, diminishing the overall aesthetics of the image. 𝟑. 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬: Removing or de-emphasizing clutter during post-processing is time and cost consuming and may not always yield the most natural-looking results. By recognizing the significance of decluttering before a shoot and understanding its impact on the final product, real estate professionals can create images that leave a lasting impression on potential buyers. From an editor's perspective, decluttered spaces are a canvas where the property's true potential shines through, resulting in photographs that inspire and captivate. For this Friday's "Photo Taken Just For Fun": Landmarks. Put your hand up if you recognise this building? And keep it up if you've seen pictures of it before? Ok, so I reckon there's a good chance that most people who have been to London, will have seen The Shard, as this building is known. Its 72-storey height makes it's striking architecture visible over a wide area. One of the main challenges in taking any photograph of such a well-known landmark, is finding anything different from what everyone has photographed before. So I was quite pleased when I stumbled across this view and was immediately drawn to the way that the dark shape formed by bridge and stairs almost runs around the shape of the building. Thanks to Google's image search, I now realise that the exact same view has also been captured and shown off by a number of other photographers. So if I wanted "unique", I've scored a fail! However, everyone's eye is different and none of the other images I've now seen, are exactly the same. This wasn't a shoot-and-forget as it's fair to say that this image has been shifted in the edit. What the photographer does at this point is a matter of choice and preference. I chose to use Adobe's Lightroom allowed me to lighten the shadows under the bridge and to bring back detail that had gone to near black. I also made adjustments to the colour, making more of the sky and brightening the red light strip under the bridge arch. And detail around the Shard was made crisper by boosting contrast. On a different day, I'd quite likely take a different approach: this can be the fun of digital photography! Anyone else want to share their snap of a famous landmark? Bonus points for a different take! 🔔 Want more photo tips and nonsense? Ding my bell! 🎷 Want to talk about your ideal business image? 📸 The Power of Dodging and Burning in Landscape Photography 🌄 Dodging and burning, a technique widely used by portrait photographers, is also highly effective in landscape work. This technique, traditionally associated with Photoshop, can significantly alter the visual impact of an image. However, many photographers may not realize its potential in enhancing their landscape shots. I couldn't agree more with this insightful article by Fstoppers. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eqqcv4Xd Dodging and burning allows photographers to selectively lighten or darken specific areas of a photo, bringing out details, enhancing contrast, and creating a more captivating visual story. By carefully manipulating light and shadow, landscape photographers can accentuate the natural beauty of their subjects and guide the viewer's eye through the frame. As a director and photographer, I've witnessed the transformative power of dodging and burning firsthand. It adds depth, dimension, and drama to landscape images, elevating them to a whole new level. Whether you're capturing vast mountain ranges, serene coastal scenes, or vibrant cityscapes, this technique can help you create images that leave a lasting impression. So, if you're a landscape photographer looking to take your work to the next level, I highly recommend diving into the world of dodging and burning. It's a tool that can unlock endless possibilities and allow you to unleash your creativity. Give it a try and see the difference it can make in your photography journey. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this technique. Have you used dodging and burning in your landscape photography? 2024 - Bringing color back. So, three months of monochrome street photography have passed and I learned a lot. Top of the iceberg: 1. I didn’t miss color, but found a number of photos I passed on (really) because they just needed color. Also, I like mixing up color and black and white, and setting my camera to black and white (film simulation) works best. When selecting photos, I easily remember what photos needed color. Keeping that workflow. 2. I dislike editing. For a ton of people, this is a fun part of photography, for me it’s a necessary evil. My Fujifilm luckily does more than half the work for me 💛 Will be further optimizing my edit workflow. I hear excellent stories about @loupedeck - does that work with iPad? 3. It’s a different focus. Contrast and light versus colors that pop. Might be personal, but I just see different things when I choose color or monochrome before hitting the streets. 4. Instagram audiences don’t care. Just post compelling photos, I found from a number of polls I did. Makes all the sense in the world to me. 5. Shooting RAW and JPG on a single SD card, like in the X100V, doesn’t make sense to me. I shoot RAW, so I can shoot both color and black and white at the same time. This works for me. On the X-T5 I shoot RAW and a JPG backup on the second SD card (faster than two RAWs, and I delete JPGs after backing up the RAWs). Another thing that comes to mind: Most people in my street photography workshops shoot color. This matters, as I really hope to host a lot more workshops this year. Depends on the number of people that sign up, obviously. My schedule for 2024 can be found here https://lnkd.in/esdCwdhB or via the link in my bio. Hope to see you in the streets, no matter if you shoot color or black and white.
