The upper end of regional aviation is made of some decisive moments that shape the aviation landscape for the next two decades or so. In the late 80's and early 90's, in one of these moments, Bombardier and Embraer launched the CRJ100/200 and ERJ145. These 50 seaters could comply with the US scope clause and sold more than a thousand aircraft each, becoming a constant (and sometimes annoying) presence for anyone flying in North America. Then, late 90's, another pivotal moment when Bombardier reluctantly came with the CSeries (after prioritizing elongated models of the CRJ family) and Embraer launched the EMB170/190 family. I was working for Embraer at the time and followed the unfolding of events very closely. There was a healthy excitement and nervousness in all of us trying to predict if the bet which could make or break the company was going to pay off. It did pay off, big time. Ironically I later moved to Canada to work at Bombardier, including the Challenger 850 model that was nothing more than a CRJ200 fitted with a business interior configuration. Again, I saw the whole clash (or dance?) of strategies, including the morphing of the CSeries into the A220. Since then, many peons have moved on this chess-board. New technologies are making their way through from the smaller planes up, reverting what was the usual opposite trend. Societal and governmental pressure for a greener aviation, the rapid aging of the 50 seater fleets, the sad 737MAX events and Boeing own internal problems, and of course a thousand other factors that don't fit here, put the sector in another of these pivotal moments that will shape aviation for the next 20 years. And it seems that Embraer is the one to make the first move this time. Please don't miss hearing the great podcast below that so beautifully describes what is going on now for Embraer. The Air Current published a deep dive on Friday about Embraer's next new airplane project and all the strategic forces at play behind its big decision. (Link in comments) To go right along with it, Brian Sumers and I made Embraer the topic of this week's episode of The Air Show. Consider them a matched set.

Interesting discussion on possible technologies for a clean sheet A320 replacement. A composite fuselage is not so surprising. Wing span equivalent to an A330 with folding wingtips? CFM Rise engine with 13 foot rotor diameter and 20% lower fuel burn compared with today's best of class engines?

Renaud Anjoran and Paul Adams look at Boeing's recent troubles, based on information from news reports, that seem to have been caused by bad manufacturing habits. 😥 #sofeast #podcast #boeing #737max #airsafety #airplanemanufacturing #qualitycontrol #rework #suppliermanagement #manufacturing
