It’s World Telecommunications Day and among my favourite adventures is a small tactical campaign (#Twitter contest) we ran on this day in 2013 - Myntra’s #DialForStyle. You might wonder what telecom and #fashion have to do with each other, but that was the kick. Before paid approaches and influencers hijacked it, we used social media extensively to build the brand and connect it with fashion and style. Finding creative ways (no we didn't call it hacks) to increase the brand's visibility by linking it to topicality was a big part of the job, and the fun of it! What a brilliant acquisition strategy, HDFC Pixel Card! The exclusive pre-sale for Diljit Dosanjh's concert in India is generating so much FOMO among everyone. Office groups, Reddit—every community group is asking, "HDFC Pixel card hai kya?" I did a quick Google Trends search too, and of course, the data speaks for itself. In this era, where most brands want to be present and relevant on social media, HDFC became a part of ‘social buzz’ without even spending specifically on it or on the influencers. I am sure nobody is sharing their posts (they didn't even spend on IG collab with Diljit - that would be costing extra in the deal ofc), but everyone has started a conversation about the card and is applying to get it asap. Marketers : is the application of #FOMO good for every promotion? I feel it is excessively being used by businesses and negatively hitting consumer experience. Take for example 2 or 3 day sale on eCommerce websites from time to time.
