Can DocuWest Also Become DocuWeek in Denver? How "Cool" Would That Be? Dear Documentary Lovers and/or Those Who are Doc Curious, The 14th edition of DocuWest takes place this week October 19-21. As Denver's first, and only, documentary film festival. Do you think Denver's newly elected mayor will proclaim it DocuWeek? Likely not. As we didn't ask. But we will. 'Cause we are all about films, fun, innovation and giving back to community. Plus, it'll make a pretty doggone good week of non narrative stories. Oh, here's our pitch: "Mayor Johnson, DocuWest is produced by our recently formed nonprofit the Denver Documentary Society. And, while we acknowledge at present, it's not likely we can meet the attendance figures of our city's other great nonprofits. We are on the rise. Heading into year three, Denverdocsoc will continue to differentiate itself by working to become one of MovieMakers 25 Coolest Festivals in the (freakin') entire world. And, while we admit our it make take a minute to prime the pump. We are here to tell ya that while nice. Meow Wolf & Casa Bonita are not cool (and are way overpriced - even for tourist traps). It is also a gentrified crime that Denver's gay bathouse, Lake Steam Baths is now a spa. Because that was grrrity cool and film folks would've dug that. So let's get real. Denver needs more flair. With three solid programs in place: screenings, an education program & partnership w/ DPS, AND an award-winning civil rights filmmaking production joint (right here in our ol' dusty cowtown). How about "Your Honor" proclaim the third week in October DocuWeek? It would be another great way to engage the city with a big ol' dose of reality. How Cool would that be?"

There are currently 4454 open Festivals on FilmFreeway. This makes me question the legitimacy and value of some of these Laurels. As an independent Filmmaker working with limited budgets. How do you choose which Festivals are the right ones for your project. Some don’t even have a Website or a LinkedIN page. What’s the point of spending all that money in Festival fees. What will I get out of it besides a Laurel?
