Series 2 Expeditions Focus : Nurdles During our second series of coastal research expeditions, the Strandloper Project will survey for nurdles to determine if there has been any change from the first expedition series. While nurdle density surveys between 2020 and 2023 documented nurdle densities after the August 2020 spill, our 2019 expedition, documented high densities between Blombos and Wilderness. The surveys from 2019 would suggest that there is a constant loss of nurdles into the ocean, most likely from industrial sites that produce plastic items. If this is indeed the case, regulations to mitigate the loss of nurdles from industrial sites will have to be upgraded. We kick off our second series of expeditions on the 5th October, when we hike from Pringle Bay to Struisbaai. #SPE24 #nurdle #plasticfreeoceans

Governments around the world should start directing quantitative easing (read: print money) towards employing as many people as possible to be trained and deployed to do coral reef restoration. Diving deep into spatial data for climate-resilient ecological restoration has become my new endeavor. Thanks to ESRI's "GIS for Climate Action" course, I'm now exploring advanced tools to visualize climate risks and their impacts on projects. One of my exercises involved using these tools to forecast sea level rise impacts on Miami's coast. This exercise utilizes a "3D scene" to incorporate real-world elements, such as terrain movement and the 3D extent of features like trees and buildings, making the visualization more interactive. 📣 After a very challenging few days, the Sea Change Row crew is back at sea! 🌊 Our Founder, Kat Bruce, and her crew unfortunately faced bad weather from day one, necessitating a long pause in Dover to repair their equipment and wait for better conditions. The team set off again on Monday and has now passed the Isle of Wight, rowing close to Studland Bay.🚣♀️ In this area, two great initiatives are taking place: Blue Meadows and the Restoration of Seagrass for Ocean Wealth (ReSOW) . Blue Meadows is an initiative by the Ocean Conservation Trust aimed at protecting, regenerating, and restoring seagrass meadows in the southwest of England. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site was instated in 1990 for exemplifying the outstanding physical features of glacial geological processes — including ice fields, remnant valley glaciers, canyons and exceptional examples of erosion and deposition of the Rocky Mountain Biogeographical Province. It also includes a number of unique cultural landscapes and sites such as Abbot Hut (also a National Historic Site) that has served as a basecamp for climbers between the summits of Mount Lefroy and Mount Victoria in Banff National Park. New research from the University of Calgary examined the two most common approaches to Abbot Pass, and how a warming climate has changed access and safety. Reef restoration is commonly seen as a scientific discipline that is implemented to try and improve the health and resilience of coral. It includes activities such as research on heat tolerant zooxanthellae, hybridisation of warm and cold coral species, sexual reproduction techniques of coral larvae and a host of other innovative and dynamic disciplines to improve our understanding of how to support the health of coral reefs into the future. But restoration is implemented by people. And when you ask people about their experience participating in active reef restoration many of the motivations are emotional and the benefits of restoration increasingly social. This film was produced for #ReefFutures2024 with the aim to highlight the motivations of restoration practitioners. What a journey! And certainly not exactly the one the Sea Change Row team had in mind when they set off from Tower Bridge back in June. This year’s GB Row Challenge hasn’t been smooth sailing. When our Founder, Kat Bruce, and her all-woman crew began their expedition, the mission was clear: row around Great Britain to collect eDNA samples, underwater sound recordings, microplastics samples, and water temperature data to map out our oceans' health. Clear but not simple. The GB Row Challenge is billed as the "world's toughest rowing race." The combination of bad weather, which the crew faced from day one, and the significant damage their boat sustained as a result, made it impossible for them to complete their journey safely. However, the team was not defeated and they continued their mission on land, visiting some of the most interesting conservation and sustainability projects that contribute to supporting our oceans around Great Britain. Whilst on the water, the crew had managed to gather vital data along the east and south coasts. The NatureMetrics lab has already started processing the eDNA samples and we couldn’t be more excited to see the results!
